Can't figure out Massa

Formula One
comment on the article

Hello All

As this weekends race approaches, I have been thinking, and I just can't figure out Massa and his ability level.

I am not sure if he is talented and quick, but just not quite there as far as the championship goes, or if he is supreme and just needs a couple of things to fall right and he could be champion.

I have been watching F1 since 83/84 (tho very young at the time) and I have always felt I could get a feel of a drivers ability level, their strenghts/weaknesses and where they lay in the grand scheme of things as a driver. Of course that is subjective and others may not have agreed, but in my own mind I knew what I thought about each. But with Massa, I just can't figure him out.

His early days in F1, I saw him as pretty quick, though not blindingly so, but quite ragged, and possibly someone that would never get into one of the top top drives.

But since he got the Ferrari drive, the best I can describe him is a bit of an enigma.

There are times in qualy when he pops in a lap and the other guys just can't get it, it's like he hooks up every braking point, every apex, it's just an awesome lap. Generally, if he starts on pole, he drives a perfect race, and looks relaxed and serene and just waltzes off into the distance looking every bit a championship caliber driver.

Then there are those days when he is nearly there but just can't quite keep up with Raikonen. This doesn't mean he isn't WC material, as KR is bloomin fast, his raw pace is phenomenal.

Then ITV made quite a noise about KR being better at that tracks that he isnt good at, compared with Massa at the tracks he isn't good at. I don't agree with this 100% but get the point they were making.

Then he will make a silly error. But then he looks brilliant. I just can't figure him out. It also seems to me he strives to improve and surprises us all at times, his drive in Monace was excellent in heavy wet on what is supposed to be "not one of his tracks".

It's almost like if he really focuses hard, he iron's out his weaknesses. I am sure Schumacher has helped him in this area alot, that of focus and preperation.

So what do you all think? WC in the making, gone as far as he can on developing as a driver and won't quite be champion, or maybe something else.

Your thoughts please?

P.S I am not a fan nor do I dislike Massa, I enjoy F1 in general and would just like to work out exactly how Massa "stands" in the eyes of everyone else.

Massa has always been a strange one to figure out your quite correct. He has more up and down races than just about anyone, no real consistency whatsoever.

On his tracks he can be the best, but he is a bit like Giancarlo Fisichella in a way - although overall a better driver than 'FIZZY' they are both inconsistent but can be very fast sometimes. I don't suppose Massa will win a championship though. smiley

All you need to remember re: Massa is this.

If he was any good then Schuey would never have had him as a teammate...

-------------------------------------------------

your an idiot Schumacher was probably the best racing driver all of time and he outclassed every team mate he ever had, how can you say that massa is crap on the basis that he was Schumacher's number 2

-----------------------------------------------

I actually agree with the initial comment. MS never allowed a team mate that could threaten his dominance of the team to join and when one did he retired before we got to see if he really could hold his own against a driver from the top tier in the same machinery.

However, Massa is an enigma. When he's on form at tracks he likes he is right up there. But, time after time, he has been nothing better than anonymous at the tracks he's not fond of, Monaco this year excepted. This is the crucial difference and is the gap between him and the WDC crown. Kimi has his mishaps for sure but he is able to make the difference when it really matters as last season showed. Massa doesn't seem able to do this and maybe this is why I think he may never take a WDC crown. Of course there is time and he is still young enough to overcome these obstacles - and he is immeasurably better than he was at the start of his career.

Massa - seems like a nice guy and, on his day, unbeatable. It's just that, at the moment, those days don't happen often enough.

its abit funny when everybody is saying raw talent. what is raw talent?? massa is a great driver but he is simple. he is not manipulative like some drivers. no bullshit abt this driver.and that will make him among the best drivers in this era!!

Sorry Massa is not a great driver he's a good driver at best and regarding the Schumi stuff when did schumi ever have a team mate that he allowed to threaten him? Brundle NO. Irvine NO. Barrichello NO. Massa NO.

Anyway Massa will have the spawn of satan as his team mate soon once Kimi "retires" so I bet he wont get a look in then!!!

Massa is a great driver and he's starting to prove it. Last year he had some awful luck and still was in the hunt right until the end.

This year he's out qualifying Kimi and never looks under pressure when in the lead of a race. He's in with a real chance this year assuming he gets a bit of luck.

spectacularsteve (U9312355) - Grow up m8 Marco Ardigo will NOT be as good in F1, he simply couldn't cut it. So don't come here speaking about karting which can make max 100 m/hr. Karting is a fun sport but DEFINITELY not near the real thing. Karting, you must be joking, I wonder how many G's you get from karting. come on m8

Massa's problem is consistency and focus. I believe he has the ability to be F1 champ but he hasnt reached his peak. Hence he continues to work on his weakness something i believe MS is assiting him with.

He might be with a top team but having MS and KR as a team mate means you have to be special to put them in your shadows. The best is yet to come from Massa and it will be interesting to see how to handles the title race this season.

Massa is a Brazilian so he is a man of mood. He is very excited when he wins and very depressed when doesn't. What I think he is missing is a consistency. and I think he will never have it because of his character. He will be a good driver but not top.

Guys a he isn't a great driver. Look at last season when Alonso barged him out of the way in the last few laps to win the race in the european gp! And the numerous times Hamilton has overtaken him! I can't remember Massa winning a race where he's had to overtake someone. He's good he's got better but he isn't great and I seriously doubt he will ever win a WDC.
