Cannavaro blow hits Italy's chances

Euro 2008 Italy
comment on the article

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro will miss Euro 2008 after tearing ligaments in his left ankle during training.

The Real Madrid star collided with Giorgio Chiellini in a
practice match at Italy's base in Austria on Monday.

Fiorentina's Alessandro Gamberini has been called up as his replacement, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon likely to take over the captaincy.

How will the Azzurri cope without their talismanic skipper as they seek to qualify from Euro 2008's 'Group of Death'?

And how much of a boost is his absence to Group C rivals France, Romania and the Netherlands?

I hope the establishment quickly put him in his place.
He is not a first choice starter anyway so if he is hoping to play at all then his temperament will have to improve!!
It will be difficult enough keeping 10 men on the field with mad max & Chielini in the side, the last thing Donadoni needs is another hot head!!

I know cannavaro is brilliant but i don't think it's the worse player to lose. We can replace him with a solid centre back like barzagli, or chiellini or even big chris panucci if needs be. It would be far worse to lose pirlo as who could replace him?

lets not try and pretend that as italian fans this isnt the worst possible bit of news...im optimistic at the worst of times...but losing your captain who was SO influential at the world cup you won 2 years ago a week before your first game...when your second best centre back was a worry in the first place (barzagli has no champs league experience and only played against a poor ukraine side at the world cup) This is a nightmare...and a massive blow...and as for cassano...if he blows it this time, after the amount of chances he has had...his international career is done!

Montolivo could easily replace Pirlo, as for Materazzi he's got a red card already he can't resist them. And don't get me started on Cassono what a waste of a talent he's not needed and only causes problems. A real Bari boy.

Cassano could shine in this tournament. I know his temper is not the best, but he has always struck me as one of those characters who lives for the big games. Donadoni has to keep him under control though it'll be either a terrible mistake or a masterstroke. There's no way Lippi would've taken him that's for sure.

Cannavaro is such a huge loss, I've no doubt he would've been superb in this tournament just as he was in 2006. Barzagli was reliable enough when he came in at the last W/C but he has limited experience of the big games, but I think he will do OK. Materazzi is very unpredictable, a lot depends on how he performs. He's the one I'm concerned about. He messed up Inter's chances against Liverpool in the CL with a moment of stupidity, and the tackle in the WC final was madness (though he did make up for it! winkeye ).
