Montgomerie slides out of top 100

comment on the article

Colin Montgomerie has dropped out of the world's top 100 for the first time since 1990.

Monty finished 58th at the Wales Open to slide from 95th to 102nd in the rankings and is almost certain to miss out on automatic Ryder Cup selection.

The Eight-time European number one lies 57th in the Ryder Cup world points list and 38th in the European table.

Without a top-40 finish in strokeplay since January, Montgomerie is ranked two places above Darren Clarke.

Clarke's fourth place at Celtic Manor maintains his climb through the rankings after being outside the top 200 at the start of the year.

Montgomerie's finish continues his disappointing run of results, however, and he is set to miss out on one of the 10 automatic slots in Europe's Ryder Cup team that will defend the trophy in Valhalla in September.

He will target the six weeks immediately following the Open at Royal Birkdale in July, the period in which Europe's captain Nick Faldo says will be key to Montgomerie's hopes of gaining one of the captain's two wildcard selections.

Montgomerie has struggled for form throughout the season and failed to qualify for the Masters for only the second time in 17 years.

What are your thoughts on Monty's slump and will Faldo pick him for Valhalla?

Not only did Monty not win a major, he never won a PGA tournament here in the US. He's a tremendous Ryder Cup player, but when he's flying solo, it's all just too much for him. Who can forget his mythic crash and burn at the US Open at Winged Foot? This is the same guy that just a couple months ago was bitching about not getting into The Masters. Now he's out of the top 100! Sheesh.

The man is done! I am Scottish but live in the USA and think that Monty is a whiner also. The reason he has never won a major or won on the PGA tour is because he makes excuses and is in complete denial. HE thinks people don't appreciate him or give him a chance but fact is he is a talented player who has never pushed himself. After winning the order of merit a couple of times he should have moved to the US PGA tour and stayed there. Winged Foot made me sick and sums up his career. A nearly man and I am fed up of supporting him and his excuses.

Colin Montgomerie - the most prolific British winner in European Tour history with 31 titles and a record eight money titles (including seven straight, 1993-99). But how great can you really be if you're 'nought-for-your-career' on the PGA Tour?
He's a career underperformer who gets his shorts in a twist on a regular basis. He's never proven that he can perform in the U.S. or under major pressure, instead choosing to be king of the 'B-League' on the European Tour (and it IS a weaker tour). He's been past his prime for years now.
The four stages of Montgomerie's career:
1.Who's Colin Montgomerie?
2. Get me Colin Montgomerie!
3. Get me a YOUNG Colin Montgomerie?
4. Who's Colin Montgomerie?

Monty has a bad attitude and thinks he is better than he is. Never to win a major, and never likely to, as he has not got the nerves under intense pressure. Change his attitude, get fit and maybe his talent will come to the fore again. However we all know that is as likely as Darren Clarke winning the British Open!

Monty, having the silver aristocratic spoon still wedged in his mouth, is just a spoilt little boy. When things go well he's smiling, if not, the world is against him!! Why couldn't he hack it in the US? They're too good for him, that's why! wah

Before the Master's Monty complained about not being invited to play, while a couple of asian players were. Need one remind Monty that the Indian Jeev Milkha Singh has TWO second places and a WIN on the EPGA Tour...surely Monty's complaint about the Master's invite can hold no water. Before the US Open he is quoted to have said...." If I did not think I could win, I would not go"....well....after two rounds of the Open, Monty is at 13 over and lying 136th out of 154 playing the Open. Worse still, in the 2 rounds, he has not made birdie on any of the par 5 holes. He will miss the cut by the proverbial mile. I think it is time Monty learned to zip his lip !! As the saying goes....Produce or perish Monty... or at least be prudent with your expressed opinions !!! Right now they are making you look very silly.

Please amend the details I mentioned in the earlier comment....( I did not realise that I was looking at his scores after 17 holes of the second round. He apparently bogeyed the par 5 18th hole too) After two rounds of the US Open, Monty stands at 14 over par, and 141st out of 154 players competing the event!! Makes even the most ardent fan wobbly kneed !!!
