Czech Republic v Scotland

International Scotland
comment on the article

Here we go again! And just when you all thought the footy season was done and dusted...

Scotland face the Czech Republic in the AXA Arena in Prague tonight in a so-called international friendly.

It's the Czechs final hurrah before heading off for Euro 2008 while George Burley's depleted Scotland side begin their preparations for the World Cup qualifiers in September...

Scotland's new boss suffered seven call-offs for his first game against Croatia in March and will have to do without six key players for tonight's clash...

How will Scotland fare?

The Czechs are probably a less daunting prospect without skipper Tomas Rosicky and Pavel Nedved...but they will still provide a stern test for the Scots...

Let's hear all your rants and raves as the action unfolds...

Fine, Ok, all you Scots (and half Scots) may strangely rate your own country over England footballing wise; largely due to bias, slightly due to form.

Now, to argue that Scotland is better than England is ludicrous. Yes, the country is smaller, but isn't England considerably smaller than the USA, the team we beat on Wednesday? so 'talent pool' size is irrelevant; it's the talent that you actually produce that counts.

Also, I didn't say Mclaren WOULD have taken charge of Scotland, but had a manager of his calibre been in charge of your qualifying campaign then you'd of had no chance. In Sven, at least we QUALIFIED for some tournaments and went out merely on penalites on 2 occasions, 1 occasion going out to the 'then-to-be' world champions. Scotland haven't qualified for anything significant in a decade and claim they're the better team?

And the arguement about the games against Croatia and Russia, even with Numpty Mclaren in charge, we still beat Russia at home and undeservedly lost away, lost away at Croatia only to a fluke goal and poor formation, whilst at Wembley we played the better football but had poor goalkeeping skills from Carson.

Overall, this arguement is pointless. Despite how stubborn some Scottish fans are, here's a reality check; your best player is Barry Ferguson, a blackburn reject, and your manager has never won a league in his life.

Face it, your team sucks. No one looks at Scotland as a big team who perform; you lost 3-1 to the Czechs for christ's sake! Your ranked lower than England as a nation, and we've been playing crap for the past 12 months.

Talent pool is relevant, but consider that the usa have many more mainstream sports, hence why they arnt so good at "soccer" as they could be. and yeah as scots we prefer to be underdogs thats they way we like it, where as england thrive on thinking they are "great" and when they come up short once more you all moan and demand yet another managerial sacking. And i reckon that you have been below par for a hell of a lot longer than the last 12 months. You may have excellent individual players but have been unable to gel them as a team for years, and yeah we lost to the czechs today a very good team who are rated higher in the world than us and have been for a while, and in closing barry ferguson a blackburn reject errm why was he made captain of blackburn if he was so bad and would you perfomr at your best if you recieved a completley shattered knee cap errm not!!, typical big head from egland, most scots wouldnt argue that england are better as they are but the fact that you fail to recognize that scotland as a nation are on the up in international football and a little bit at club level just goes to show how ignorant you are

Here in Germany the Scots are seen as a very decent side. I cant comment for other nations but certainly I dont think anyone wanted the Scots or the English as their second seeds this time around. Of course you may accuse me of bias being Scottish but trust me when I say nobody was humouring me in the Berti Vogts era about the Scots having a decent side!

Essien I think you`ve been at the cooking sherry again. I don`t think any fair minded Scottish fan could honestly say that England are a better all round team than Scotland but you really don`t have a lot to crow about.
You`re still basking in the glory of 1966 and refuse to move forward. The English Premiership is quickly becomong as boring and predictable as our Premier league and it`s sad because only a few years ago it was without question the best in the world by a streetlength. Your league is peppered with expensive foreign imports which has the knock on effect of stifling home grown talent. I think the best thing that could happen would be to limit the number of foreign players in a team or have to play a certain number of home grown ones. This must in the long term improve the quality of international players available to capello and maybe see England back competing again for major competitions. You might even be lucky enough to get players capable of taking a penalty.
I doubt that any of this will happen because of the huge amount of money paid by SKY SETANTA etc to cover matches. they dictate why, where and when you play. As the saying goes "He who pays the piper names the tune"

If you really want to gauge a country's recent footballing success then I always think that looking at the teams of similar FIFA Ranking - and more importantly, their corresponding populations - is a good way of doing it.

If you look at it that way, England aren't doing that badly, but Scotland and Croatia in particular are overachieving.

I know it's a far from comprehensive way of doing things, but it at least gives an indication of form.

I've not even read the majority of this thread. But you always seem to get the same old thing on Scotland pages:

English tools wait til Scotland start to falter and then appear and start ripping the p1sh.

Scottish fans react by saying that England aren't much better.

Said English tools then respond with the 'how many world class players have Scotland got/who has the better team on paper argument.

Then it's a stalemate, as in all fairness there is nothing between the two nations at the moment.

If there was, it would pan out along the lines of:

Scotland: Yeah, but we've got a population of only 5 million.

England: You're rubbish.

Etc.

This is a Scottish fans thread. Unless you want to come on and be genuinely constructive, would all you English goons please stay away and stop being unecessarily antgonistic.

Scotland lost a friendly against a Euro 2008 finalist (It's a big tournament in Central Europe for talented footballing nations, look it up). We had half a team. We were always going to be second best.

Big wowee.
