Southampton's New Manager!

Championship Southampton

It seems the future's bright, the future is........ Holland. Yes Jan Poorvliet has been announced as the new manager of saints, working seemlessly in "a team of four who will work together and
take responsibility for coaching all our players", as Lowe says. I think this definitely reflects the change in our financial situations because Jan Poorvliet and also newly appointed Mark Wotte are being paid less than Nigel Pearson together.
I am sure u have seen the article on the saints site: www.saintsfc.co.uk/articles/...

Personally I am a bit dubious about the new managers seeing as they are really coming out of the blue from clubs like Helmond Sport? I would like to get the views of fellow Southampton supporters who have put up with a lot this year. Also does anybody have any info on the new managers, like what they were like at previous clubs?

I think in theory it is a very forward think strategy lord lowe has put in considering the clubs financial state. A state admittedly caused by his failure to invest in the squad in 2003 after the FA cup final.

But I personally like the idea of using the dutch coaching style to further develop our already outstanding youth set up, although I would have liked to have seen Pearson kept on in some capacity.

Will it work or will we have a different manager and protests about the chairman again by xmas. Only time will tell.

Awaydaysaint -"Say bye bye to Viafara, Surman, Dyer, Rasiak, Skacel, Idiakez and probably a few more".

Take Surman out of that prophecy and I'd be quite happy. All the others are serial under achievers in my book!!

The appointments and the youth policy sound good but the proof of the pudding will be in what experienced players are retained/recruited to play with the kids.

Bale and Dyer got kicked badly in the Championship because they were quick. You can't get out of this division with just kids. We need to retain Andrew Davies, Safri and Stern John at least and find one or two others who can play and put their foot in as well. If we can do that maybe we can build a team to challenge for a play off place in 2009/2010.

It won't happen next season that is for sure.

And remember never trust Rupert Lowe. He is a man with a lot of power for a small investment (6.9%) of the shares. His reasons for being in Football are: Money, power, control and recognition and to influence football management committees (politics).

He is not in it for the fans (we are a source of income not a customer who has to be satisfied, he knows we will always turn up in reasonable numbers to make him a decent living) or for trophies.

If it goes well he will take the praise, if it goes wrong the coaches will be sacked. It won't be his fault

Saints fans need a reality check: Last season we lost the parachute payments but wages increased by 30%. This is despite selling our best players (Bale, Jones, Baird) and buying lesser players. The result of this madness is that we are losing £1m per month with a team that stayed in the Championship by 1 goal. None of this was caused by Lowe who would never have allowed the wage bill to spiral so out of control! I hoped that Pearson would be given a chance but perhaps he wasnt the right man for our new circumstances. Lets hope that Rupes has got it right (some of his appointments were inspired - Jones, Hoddle, Strachan) and that we can move forward!

According to Dutch football weekly Voetbal International Poortvliet has said his move to Saints could be off because of his current club's objections.
