Bradley: "I want to fight the Hitman"

comment on the article

A bout against IBF junior welterweight titleholder Paul Malignaggi has been mentioned as the likely next fight for IBO light welter king Ricky Hatton, however, WBC super lightweight champion Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley (22-0, 11 KOs), who recently dethroned Hatton's countryman and arch rival Junior Witter, says he wants to face Hatton instead.

"I truly feel Ricky Hatton and my style of fighting would make for a more fan pleasing fight than he and Paul Malignaggi," stated Bradley. "This is no disrespect to Paul as he is worthy champion but even aside from the styles there is no certainty on when Malignaggi's hand will be completely healed. Ricky Hatton has held the IBO, IBF, and WBA titles at 140. He has never held the green belt (WBC title). Ricky deservingly is ranked the best fighter at 140 in the pound-for-pound rankings and I'm sure Ricky would want to hold a belt felt by many as 'the' belt."

"A fight between Hatton and I would be attractive now for a few reasons. Obviously one reason is unification. The other is that I just fought in England and won my world title against Junior Witter in a major upset in front of a large British and American television audience so I'm fresh in the minds of the boxing public. There is still doubt by some if I just had a lucky night."

"Lastly is, though I'm no Floyd Mayweather Jr., how better could Hatton gage his readiness for a Mayweather Jr. rematch than against a young unbeaten fighter in his prime with very good speed and boxing skills in myself. A fight between Hatton and I could be fought in England or U.S. as Ricky has a huge fan base that will follow him regardless of where he fights. I don't speak for my promoters Gary Shaw or Thompson boxing, I'm just giving my opinion as a fighter that I think the timing is right."

BTW those ratings were for the LW division!

Should've mentioned that on my original thread.

I should point out before I begin that this post isn't entirely serious...

So:

Bradley took on the no. 2 LW in the world as a massive underdog (I myself knew virtually nothing about him and didn't give him a hope) and won the WBC belt quite comfortably.

Hatton (deep breath...) just beat Lazcano, who got beat by Harris, the guy who got beat by Witter, who Bradley just beat.

Paulie Mop-head-agnaggi was quite comfortably beaten in his second-to-last fight (yes he was, the judges scorecards mean nothing to me)and shouldn't have a belt for Hatton to challenge him.

Hatton has the IBO belt (eh?), Bradley has the WBC belt.

Should we not be asking what Ricky Hatton has done to deserve a crack at Tim Bradley? laugh

Before the Hatton fanboys wade in on the attack, this is in no way a serious post, I'm just highlighting the strange (and slightly ridiculous) circumstances surrounding this debate, i.e. the best LW in the world has a fringe orginisation belt, the main belt is held by a guy many boxing fans had heardly heard of before he took on Witter and Malignaggi (the weakest LW belt holder) got a bit of a pasting and a gift decision in his second-last fight and (in my eyes at least) isn't even a champion!

Fact is Bradley has done enough to put himself in the top 5 in the division for me. At 24 I think it's important he takes his time now before looking at any other top fighters, he's more than entitled to take a couple of easier fights. I applaud him for chasing after the best in the division.

He's a class act, in and out of the ring, but Hatton is a bridge too far at this juncture.

Teej.........

The fact is no one cares about the belts, Hatton is undefeated at LWW, he beat the guy who was the main man bar none, and beat him well, and has gone on to stop Castillo at the weight (even with him being at the tail end), and has beaten a few other belt holders.

Its not what you hold, its who you have beaten in this case. Shame really that the belts arent such a shambles that the fighters would stick by them.

From what I remember Paulie Malignaggi didn't have the crap kicked out of him against Miguel Cotto he actually took him the distance and troubled him on occasions during the fight.

I saw the Bradley v Witter fight and Bradley fully deserved the win, the Junior Witter that fought that night would have been eaten alive by Hatton. I also believe it's a case that Malignaggi and Witter, who both seem intent on facing Hatton, took there eye off the ball AS USUAL in these situations and they did not fight to there best ability. There was absolutely no evidence last Saturday that Malignaggi deserves a fight in New York against Hatton but he will probably get it, however if he fights like he did last week, Hatton will take him out.

From another perspective, Hatton will have to beware of is Malignaggi's footwork around the ring and how he can defend himself, if he tires Hatton out in the early rounds and makes Hatton fight at his pace, he could take Hatton in the later rounds and win the fight on points who knows.

I like Timothy Bradley, he's a well respectable fighter, but despite that win over "the worlds number 2" I don't see him sustaining his reputation as world class although I'd like him to. If Bradley fights Witter again I can see Witter beating him this time round. You've only got to look at the heavyweight division and when Hasim Rahman was heavyweight champion of the world for a couple of fights but then he got taken care of in the rematch against Lewis.

I get you APOC, sorry for the late reply!

Not sure I agree 100% because I think Ricky might stand a better chance against a slightly less composed fighter (Cotto).

That said, the guy is an absolute legend and I'd avoid all Welters like the plague if I was Richard.

I honestly believe if Bradley was to take on Witter in America for a rematch, Bradley would again win on points.

as time goes on being the Ring NO1 seems to be the one which fighter are going for.

How long will it be before belts exist for the Ring title???

what do you mean belts exist for the ring title.

There is actually a belt for the ring title, Hatton has it in his photos from saturday, it looks similar to the british title i think.

yeah they do get a belt for being the Ring Champion, Ricky Hatton was the first Brit to get one I think?? I know Calzaghe got one presented to him before he fought Manfredo or before the Kessler fight.
