Ana Ivanovic was crowned French Open Champion on Saturday after a resounding 2 sets win over Dinara Safina, 6-4 6-3. She laid to rest the ghost of Paris in 2007 and looked every bit the World Number One player she is.

Ana's clay form in 2008 :

Paris = *WINNER*: Bt Arvidsson, Bt Safarova, Bt Wozniacki, Bt Cetkovska, Bt Schnyder, Bt Jankovic, Bt Safina
Rome = Second Round: Bye, Pironkova bt Ivanovic
Berlin = Semi-Final: Bt Amanmuradova, Bt Bammer, Bt Szavay, Dementieva bt Ivanovic

10 wins, 2 defeats.

Ana's successful French Open Campaign:[Rd 1] Arvidsson 6-2 7-5
[Rd 2] Safarova 6-1 6-2
[Rd 3] Wozniacki (30) 6-4 6-1
[Rd 4] Cetkovska 6-0 6-0
[QF] Schnyder (10) 6-3 6-2
[SF] Jankovic (3) 6-4 3-6 6-4
[F] Safina (13) 6-4 6-3

HTH :
Arvidsson 2-1 (2 on clay)
Safarova 1-0 (1 on clay)
Wozniacki 1-0 (1 on clay)
Cetkovska 1-0 (1 on clay)
Schnyder 4-4 (4 on clay)
Jankovic 6-1 (2 on clay)
Safina 3-1 (2 on clay)

French Open record :

2005 - Lost Quarter Final
2006 - Lost Third Round
2007 - Lost Final
2008 - *CHAMPION*

Serbia has seen it's influx of top class players enter the main tours on both the women's and men's scene. Ivanovic is just one, and is the highest ranked Serb in world tennis today at world number one.

Brilliant performance Ana. A muscle injury will keep her out of Eastbourne but hopefully she'll be completely ready for her 3rd slam of the year and another final.

mrees, if you're still here, here are your comments that made me doubt your tennis knowledge

"take away grass and Federer wouldn't be the player he is."

On one obvious level, that is true, but you imply he wouldn't be much of a player at all. In fact he'd still have way more Slams than Rafa even without grass. Take clay away and Rafa would have no slams and 5 ATP titles, so he'd be an also ran.

'Wimbledon especially is about fast serves. You never get good rallies.'

That simply isn't true any more. You might make a better case for the USO but even there, serve is no longer everything.

I both admire and like Rafa, but remember he hasn't won a tournament off clay for well over a year now. That might change, but there's really no evidence it will, even guys like Youzhny can just hit through him on the faster surfaces

"After Nadal's win today, it will be interesting to see how Federer plays at wimbledon"

While Federer's still around, can anyone really take the no.1 position away from him?

guy's, what are your views on this.

bad news, ana will miss eastbourne due to a muscle injury. hopefully this is just a precautionary measure in making sure she is ready for Wimbledon, but ut's not ideal.

Bad news for Ivanovic, I reckon it must be fairly serious as this now means she'll enter Wimby with no grass court practice.

sharapova, jankovic and williams sisters have no grass preperation either so its no big deal just a precaution by ana

You don't need to play official tournaments to prepare for the grass seasons. Borg never played anything between RG and Wimbledon and still won both the same year three times. winkeye

I hope it isn't anything serious though.

I'm sorry to hear Ana won't be at Eastbourne because of an abductor. Perhaps while they've got her in their custody, they can fix her adductor biggrin
