I will never forget when he chalked a heart in the clay after winning the FO2001. What a great gesture.

Yeah awesome player and could have gone on to achieve alot of great multi-surface results. Lets not forget he beat Sampras to win a Masters cup.

His b/h was a shot of beauty, even more so that Gasquet or Federer in my book - and it was seriously powerful.

Yes I agree. Edberg, Kuerten and Gasquet have the best single handed backhands in the history of the sport.

By the way, Federer doesn't even come close in that list.

Yes, but Federer doesn't need to. He's just about perfect with his forehand.

As for Kuerten, I hates his stupid grunts ("Fureeeeerrrgh!" every single point), but he's always come across as a nice guy and obviously a tremendous player. One of the few players whose first final and first title came from a Grand Slam. Such a clay-court God in Brazil that, when Lleyton Hewitt played him over there in the Davis Cup and BEAT him, the crowd went silent and Hewitt received death threats. Although, that's not unusual.

Let's say well done to Matheui, as well. Even with his injuries and in his final year, Kuerten needed to be defeated on clay. Matheui did so in three sets, so he should be commended.

I didn't see a huge amount of him, but what I saw says he was a good player, with a career sadly cut short through injury.

Just adding my contribution: Kuerten - a claycourt legend, great bloke, wonderful backhand - he'll be sorely missed. Would love to see him on the 'legends' tour, if he can move with the dodgy hip.

As some people here will already know, Guga is one of my all-time favourite players & I am so sorry that his awful injury problems have meant he has not been around much the last few years. Fingers crossed the Beeb hire him for Wimbers! Failing that, let's hope there's some kind of tribute/round-up on BBC (they do things like this so much better than Eurosport!). Anyway, I am sure I am not alone in wishing Guga a happy & fulfilling retirement. I will miss him...
