Foley and Keogh are "a beautiful surprise"

Championship Wolverhampton Wanderers
comment on the article
Giovanni Trapattoni

New Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has described the next generation of potential stars as a "beautiful surprise".

And two of the players catching his eye are Kevin Foley and Andy Keogh.

The 69-year-old Italian has spent the last six days with his squad in Dublin and Portugal, playing two games in the Algarve.

"I already know the famous players. I already know Damien Duff, I
already know Kevin Doyle," said Trapattoni.

"But it has been a beautiful surprise, the young players like Alex Bruce - he has come and played with confidence - and also yesterday, Kevin Foley, he was not bad. He can improve."

Trapattoni has been particularly pleased with the form of Keogh, who scored in both games in Portugal.

Asked about the 22-year-old, he said: "He has time to think. He is not an easy opponent.

"When the ball comes, he understands immediately what to do. That's important, very important."

He looks like a man who knows what he's on about.

With that in mind, maybe the criticism of Keogh from some Wolves fans last season was, at the very least, a touch harsh?

Whatever, it's good to read about our players being praised by the most successful manager in the history of Italian club football.

as i sed in an earlier post, they are playing nobodies, the teams they are up against are of a very low standard so i wouldnt be suprised if there keeper scored, so any player could look good when you got a very big lack of quality up against you

superFlame, it's not the performance that we're interested in so much as the assessment of Trapattoni... another real football expert who views Keogh and Foley as very good indeed...

....and do you somehow imagine that Trapattoni doesn't understand the nature of the opposition???

Yeah, SuperFlameWolf. Some people recognises talent right away and others do not even if it bites them in the...

First time I saw Keogh was in pre season in Ireland in training and I recognised his talent right away. I'm sure Trappatoni is better than most to see who's a good player. In training as in match. Enough said from me.

Regardless of who they're playing, Trapattoni is a man who knows his football, and his assessment would also be on what he's seen in training etc...

One of the low points of this season for me personally, has been the ridiculous criticism Keogh has recieved.

For me too, SmithyWolves... sad, stupid, and counter-productive. Keogh was one of the heroes of the previous season, and should have been again!

Just waiting for some of our posters on here that think they know better than Trapattoni... doh

I agree with the above, the criticism of Keogh has been a low point. I notice this isn't in the express and star.. surprise, surprise.

I've always rated Keogh very highly, it's good to see he is getting the praise he deserves! doh

Good article again John ok
That means a hell of a lot coming from such a great footballing mind.
If Trap thinks that highly of Keogh i hope the Keogh haters will take time to realize that we do indeed have a very special player in Andy.

What annoys me is people who criticise Keogh for not scoring enough.

Fair enough he does not have a kiler instinct, but the amount of energy he provides to the build up play is crucial for our team.

I think that if he puts on a bit more weight and improves his strength, as well as learns not to give the ball away as much (which will come in time), he could become a very good player for us.

im glad mr trappatoni made those comments
and hopefully they will have the desired affect for all concerned, because its not upheavel wolves need its stability for the club players manager and fans alike patience is key,
remember robins scored a goal4 years into sir alex,s reign at man u and saved his job,
countless trophies including 2 champions league titles and a knighthood from liz later i bet the fans who were giving fergie all that abuse are a bit stumped,
we have had some harsh times in recent seasons
and if we want them to improve we need to trust the people who are in place.
if we become a club with a sack him attitude we will keep getting further away from what we all crave success.
