Defender Degen signs for Liverpool

Liverpool
comment on the article
Philipp Degen

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has made his first move of what is likely to be a busy summer in the transfer market, signing defender Philipp Degen from Borussia Dortmund.

Benitez describes the 25-year-old Switzerland international right-back as an "offensive player" whose main strength is going forward.

What do you make of the signing?

"You're quick to forget your arsenal side finished 4th 2 of the past 3 seasons and were only a lasagna away from finishing 5th two seasons ago. You'll not get away with another fluky season like last with such a brittle squad."

Wrong response. Pool are average 4th placed team despite of finishing 2 season ahead of Arsenal. Liverpool supporters are always quick to point to their great 3rd place finishes ahead of Arsenal 2 prior years. But a big difference, before and after those 4th place finishes we were actually in contention.

During Rafa's tenuer Pool's average finsh is closer to 4, and Arsenal's. slightly better than 3. More importantly,
when Pool finished above us they did just that, they were not in contention. In other words in last 5 years you have managed 3rd place finishes only when one of the big teams struggled, much like Everton finishing 4th when you struggled in the league and finished 5th. This is why Pool is considered a 4th place team, because that is what they are and a need a bad season from one of the other big 4 teams to move up.
ALong the same line we are known to bottle it, because we lost out after staying in first place for much of the season last year and in 2005. You need to contend not juts depend on bad year from other team to claim that 4th place label is unfair. I doubt that many people in 2005/6 season thought Pool should no longer be considered as top 4, cause they finished 5th.

he cant be any worse then Ferreira, Brown or Sagna. plus he is free. If he dont cut the mustard, no loss.

Is it just me, or did you knock 3 of the most consistent right-backs in the Premierleague?

Cant afford Barry? Maybe they just want to pay what they think he is worth, and not get ripped off. The price being quoted in the press is a bit steep already.
Moving on from that stupid comment, the Degen signing is strange in that Liverpool need a left back. Selling Riise and Aurelio is not great. Insua hasn't impressed either.

______

Agree with you on the Barry situation. But Aurelio is not being sold is he?

Hes one of Switzerlands top players, he wasn't in the team at the Euros cos they couldn't get him fit.

Plus, hes free. Id be a lot more concerned at paying 7m on Dossena - I mean why couldn't we have put that money toward Barry or Keane?

The only decent right back out of those three is Sagna. Finnan's better than the other two.

What? What planet are you on?

I would say Sagna out of the three is the least consistent, but possibly the most spectacular. Ferriera, while hardly outstanding, is solid, and Wes Brown was phenomenal in United's back four last season.

How you can say Finnan is 'better' than these three is beyond me.
