Judging fights: show points round by round?

comment on the article

Why not show how the judges have scored a fight round by round?

on screen on tv and at the venue

Anyone think this will have some benefit?

something similar seems to work for the amateurs

Does anyone actually believe that the scores could be announced to the corner and the crowd and TV audience wouldn't find out. It is sure to get out if they are communicating to there boxer that they need rounds because they are behind.

Brandyrecovery your talkin'as much cr@p as metricdabs, professional bouts are scored just the same way as amateur bouts (unless you think headbuttin' and kicking scores points in professional bouts) as for the old well worn out slaps debate why has no ref ever pulled Calzaghe up in ten years for using the inside of his glove, i'll tell you why, because he doesn't. I'm sure Bernard Hopkins wouldn't like to call them slaps as they were clearly hurting him. Somewhere on the net there is a freeze framed/ slow motion clip of Calzaghe landing punches on Kessler and there it shows how Joe's shots connect turning his hand at the last split second like heat seekin' missiles, you just don't see it because there so fast.

Harry, as you seem to know precious little about boxing, I will provide you with some info.

In amateur bouts, bouts are decided on points. For a boxer to score points, he must hit the head or body of his opponent, above the belt, with the knuckles of his gloves. If a specific point gap is reached between the boxers, one of them is deemed to be outclassed. The ref can also stop the fight for a knockout or if he deems one boxer to be taking excessive punishment.

In professional boxing, the scoring is much different. They use they 10 point must system, where one boxer 'must' receive 10 points before penalties. The loser of the round receives 9 points -1 point for each knockdown. Rounds are scored on the following criteria:

Clean Punching (25%)
Effective Aggression (25%)
Ring Generalship (25%)
Defense (25%)

Scottrf you've missed the point completely and wasted your precious time explaining and also managed contradict yourself.
Firstly i would not even bother commenting on this site if i did not know the rules as above stated by your good self and i am eternally grateful for that my great grand master oracle of the noble art.

Clean Punching (25%)
Effective Aggression (25%)
Ring Generalship (25%)
Defense (25%)

All the above are relative to what i said, they have to be with volume of work rate and punches thrown. At the end of the 12th round Calzaghe had thrown more scoring punches had definitely been the more aggresive by far, ring generalship and defense was pretty even.

So please do not patronise me on what i do and don't know about boxing as you do not even know the colour of eyes, you muppet.

"professional bouts are scored just the same way as amateur bouts"

The sentence above suggested to me that you didn't know, not sure what I got wrong. And infact only the first two criteria have to do with volume of workrate and punches thrown.

Please enlighten me on the colour of eyes. (What are you on?)

I'm on a higher intellectual level than you, obviously. Ha ha. But seriously pal you are still missing my point, taking it too literally.
But if you want to start being anal about it i can be.

To be fair to you Scotrf i could of explained it a little better in what i meant.
But either way, by amateur rules or by professional rules, Calzaghe would still have won. I guess what i'm trying to say is that you can't win any fight by being static and holding for the majority of it, the thing that made Hopkins look good was that most of the few punches he threw were accurate but there was no where near enough of them also at one point Calzaghe stopped coming forward to see what would happen and Hopkins totally became static which always looks bad in a fight and in the judges eyes.

Point taken, perhaps I took what you said a bit too literally. But yes, he won the fight and I see what you are saying about actually having to do something to win!
