Finch on song in Ireland

European Tour
comment on the article

Richard Finch continued his impressive season with victory in the Irish Open to add to his New Zealand Open title in December.

The Englishman, who is up to fifth in the Order of Merit, is making a bit of a Ryder Cup surge and a few more paydays like this could see him secure a debut in Valhalla - he's up to 10th in the European points list.

Shame Lee Westwood could not maintain the form that saw him fire 64 in the third round. He ended with a level-par 72 for a tie for third.

In-form Swede Robert Karlsson is heading towards a second Ryder Cup cap, while it is good to see Chile's Felipe Aguilar in second. There's not many pro golfers in Chile, which makes it even more impressive.

And good on Rory McIlroy - a consistent four days to finish in seventh. His time will surely come soon.

So, your thoughts on the Irish Open and its implications?

Faldo wouldn't be too disappointed if the Ryder Cup placings remained as they now are:

Westwood
Stenson
Garcia
Rose
Harrington
Karlsson
McDowell
Dougherty
Jimenez
Kaymer

Captain's picks: Donald and one from Casey, Clarke, Poulter or an in-form Dane?

McIlroy won't get a pick if McDo, Kaymer, Rose and Dougherty stay in the automatic placings.

Wentworth will be pivotal with perhaps 60 World Ranking Points to the winner, and a boatload of money available. Poulter scrambling for points in Fort Worth I see; who designs his schedule?

Two wins for Richard Finch is incredible considering the trouble he went through last season.

Who would have thought that the only two English players with wins this season are Richard Finch & John Bickerton.

Perhaps Ross Fisher can add to that this week at Wentworth.

Oh a bit unfair on Westwood I think GJ. Am I right in saying he won 6 times in one season - was it back in 2000? Has the look of someone desperate to win again to break a streak but a "choker plain and simple"? A bit harsh.

Once again the world rankings computer gave the European Tour the shaft.

28 pts for Finch, 26 pts for Imada.

George O'Grady has got to do a better job of attracting leading European players to leading European events, otherwise he will be the victim of a self-fulfilling prophecy, the decline of the European Tour.

Tragic really. Let's hope Els and Singh can turbo-charge the rewards for the Wentworth winner.

Pity the field for the Irish Open wasn't stronger but some excellent golf played on a very testing course.

Good to see Westwood getting back in the groove.

From an Irish point of view Gary Murphy's return to form builds on good recent performances by Darren Clarke, Damian McGrane and Peter Lawrie.

Will Faldo risk McIlroy as one of his picks if he fails to get one of the automatic places?

He may fall short on points this season but he would be a great asset to the team.
