Night move right move for Melbourne?

comment on the article

Organisers of the Australian Open have confirmed that, from 2009, the women's singles final will be played at night.

The men's final was moved to a later time in 2005, so it will have taken four years for the ladies to get the same treatment.

Reigning Melbourne champion Maria Sharapova has voiced her approval, saying the cooler conditions "allow the players to really produce their best".

There's no doubting that conditions at Melbourne Park in the height of the Aussie summer can be brutally hot, so do you agree with the world number one?

Whenever the world No1 speaks,
whatever the world No1 says,
I agree with her!

If they moved the whole thing, as they really should do to help space the slams evenly, to March they wouldnt have to play at night.

BTW - the night thing is about global TV audiences, nothing to do with the weather.

If Screamapova said "jump off a cliff", conosu would do it.

"Jump!" she commands.
Says I, "How high?".

Well, I'm very pleased that I will no longer have to either get up at 2am or stay up till 5am on a cold January morning! Now it's the Americans' turn to suffer.

A cynic would claim that this was as much to please the global television audience than protect the players. Hard not to think of sport's foremost entrepreneur Bernie Eccleston pushing tirelessly to change the Aussie GP to a night race in the same vein as Singapore will be this year.

That said, the temperatures at Melbourne park have always caused problems. I always wondered why it was the first GS to have a roof when Wimbledon has been crying out for one for years. That was until I seen it being used to shade the players from the belting Antipodean sunshine, rather than persistant British rain.

Sensible move either way...

i don't think many matches should be played at night, even though night matches are something special, the human body starts to shut down ever so slightly after midday, this could affect players best performances
