Joan Guzman

I have seen Guzman a couple of times and he looks a very good, skillful fighter. However, I think he still has a lot to prove. He is talking like he is a top ten pfp fighter but he hasn't settled at a weight and proved anything yet.

He has now moved to LW and is claiming that the WBO have made him mandatory for Campbell because he was their SF champ. he has never had a fight at the weight but now thinks he should jump ahead of Casamayor (interim champ) and Khan (Mandatory). I know this is in line with WBO rules but it is a complete nonsense.

Where do you rate Guzman? Do you believe he still has a lot to prove? What weight do you think he would do best to settle at?

I don't get Guzman. He's obviously a talented fighter and on his day he looks almost unbeatable, very skillful and a vicious puncher. As has been said there are big names around that he could beat. Needs to take the bull by the horns and do it quick.

So if Guzman has been installed as Campbell's mandatory given he was champion at the weight below does that mean that David Haye should be Klitschko's mandatory (WBO) when he moves up?

It's all a complete mess, they are a joke.

Well seeing as Casamayor is fighting Diaz, maybe Khan should fight Guzman for the right to face Campbell, I personally don't see Khan or Warren wanting that fight just yet.

Lightweight is now the division to watch as long as they all mix it up. Pacman, Guzman, J Diaz, D Diaz, Julio Diaz, Campbell, Khan, Katsidis and Casamayor all working for them titles.

Defernately the time for Khan to step up his opponents, I can safely say if Khan fights these guys and beats them, even with a defeat or two along the way, he can cement his reputation.

Very exciting times.

Guzman has looked the part for a bit too long now without really doing much. He's becoming like Castillo later in his career in that you never really know if he's going to fight or not.

Agree with the mandatory thing, ridiculous. i dont know why these organisations even bother to justify their decisions.

Lightweight is definitely the most exciting division for the next couple of years. You will have fighters outside the recognised top ten that most fans would have heard of. Some potential crackers.

Whatever Khan or Warren say, he still won't be going in with anybody who can crack an egg for another year or so.

Regarding this post, Guzman for me is a fighter with all the tools to be remembered as a great, but I doubt he'll be remembered at all if he doesn't get in some battles against any of the fighters Hayemaker just mentioned - and soon.

Very talented fighter, and as klute says, a banger at lower weights who has transformed himself (well, and been transformed) into a sweet boxer. The mayweather's got hold of him and there's a touch of floyd in him recently.

As for the messing people around...this is nothing new with guzman. He has a history of it, and by all accounts is a complete fruit bat. This combined with the bad luck (in boxing terms, financially) of being from the dom rep, have kept him out of the limelight. As said, at his age... oldish for a lower weight fighter... we may have already seen his best days. Shame, as very capable of mixing with the very best imo, but lacking the career defining fights.

No disrespect to AA, but with Guzman's lack of activity, he should have been chasing bigger things on the rare occasions he deigns to get in the ring. Maybe he's realised that a little late in the day.

I suspect Guzman is looking for paydays now. He's established himself as a good fighter, I just wonder if he's box office enough to draw the best fighters into the ring.

Lightweight sure is drawing somne good fighters though!

I think Guzman has the potential to unify the division, as he's far better than Campbell and IMO casamayor. I think his biggest cthreats will be the Diaz(s) and Khan. Only time will tell.

You've got to be kidding. Campbell and Casamayor would demolish Khan as he stands now, and Diaz would also leave him for dust. Khan is not in their league yet and we shouldn't kid ourselves that he is until Khan steps up his opposition big time.
