Motorcyclist Robert Dunlop has died after suffering severe chest injuries in a crash in Thursday's practice session at the North West 200.

Another Northern Ireland rider, Darren Burns, suffered a suspected broken leg and concussion in the accident, but is said to be stable in hospital.

The accident happened in the 250cc qualifying session, near Portrush in County Antrim.

Dunlop's brother Joey was killed in a racing accident in Estonia in 2000.

Just watched the 1st BBC highlights programme and Michael's brave NW win in the 250cc class. If there's a man alive who isn't in tears after watching Stephen Watson's post race interview, then they aren't human. What guts, determination and humility from Michael and the entire Dunlop family and all those good folk involved with racing. May Robert rest in peace.

I was at the metropole corner on saturday when Michael took the lead in the 250cc race. The roar of the crowd and atmosphere is something I will never forget. I and so many others can say they were so proud to be there to witness such a fitting tribute to Robert Dunlop.

Hearing that Robert went the same way as Joey was hard to take. Two amazing men taken from their families and their fans far too early. Many a happy memory do I have of Robert at the North West during my childhood.

All my love and condolences to the Dunlop family,

Natalie (originaly from Bangor N.I, now Dunfermline ,Scotland)

Robert was beset with Injury after years of racing, After his spill at the TT when his rear wheel disintergrated at Glen Helen was a miricle in its self. This time a bike failure let him down. The Dunlop family are steeped in Road Racing and Robert died doing the thing he loved. Non Motorcyle fans will never understand why these guys put themselves at such risk, but as an ardent fan I feel the world has lost a true hero. My condolences to the Dunlop Family. We shall never forget.

My Thoughts and Love go out to all of the Dunlop family.

I was there on Thursday when the tragic news came through and no one could believe it.
Was watching from the finish line on Saturday when Michael won and there was not a dry eye in the crowd.

Your dad would be so proud of you

Robert will be greatly missed by all
