Jeremy Coney demeans Test Match Special

International Tests England
by Censura (U1681115) 15 May 2008
comment on the article

Jeremy Coney was commenting on TMS today (May 15th) when Ross Taylor was batting for the Kiwis. Here is what he said:

"[Ross Taylor] is not a New Zealander"

and

"He's from a Pacific Island, but I don't know which one"

Coney's remarks were offensive and ignorant. Taylor was born in Lower Hutt which a town just north of Wellington - as Coney should know as he comes from Wellington himself. Taylor is of mixed race - his father is a white New Zealander (Pakeha) and his mother an immigrant from Samoa. There had never been the slightest doubt that Taylor is as much a Kiwi as anyone else in the NZ squad (and, for that matter, as Coney).

Coney should not be commenting on TMS if he reveals such ignorance and prejudice on the air.

I think Coney was trying to make a witticism and got his words tangled. There is no way he would be crass enough to question Taylor's nationality based on his having samoan heritage. Had he described Vettori as an italian that would not have been considered inflamatory. I do agree Coney got his foot in his mouth to a degree that was unacceptabe for a media professional.

Findharwood seems guilty of typical british hypocricy when it comes to importing sporting talent (Vainakolo the most obvious and recent example, oh and some guy called Pietersen) at least the All Blacks who were born outside the country speak with NZ accents.

It wouldn't surprise me if the ICC Censure Coney for making a (very stupid) joke, when they still haven't censured Mugabe (Patron of the Zim Cricket board) for the rather more racist act of Genocide (referring to the matabeles)

Hugo - I have absolutely no idea why Lesley Vainikolo is playing for England. He shouldn't be.
At least Pietersen has shown some commitment to this country, meeting the residency requirements and getting the three lions tattooed on his arm!!
Anyway, I'd imagine too that Ross Taylor talks with a Kiwi accent - it wasn't me who said he wasn't a New Zealander...

Coney is a pompous didact and he's ruining my summer, but this isn't certainly a racist comment. He may just have been misinformed. He should clarify his position though.

I can't believe what I'm reading!!

To be honest I don't really rate the guy but lets face it, he's hardly some goose-stepping nazi is he?!?!

Although I didn't hear the comment 'from the horses mouth' as it were, I hardly imagine he said it to upset the sad minority who've nothing better to do than play the race card.

Lets face it as a New-Zealander he can't possibly be a racist. Infact, New-Zealanders are so tolerent of foreighners they let them fill up half their rugby team!! And they still choke at the world cup!!

And before all the 'well you've got Vainokolo' taunts start let me just say he shouldn't be playing for England. A, because he's not English, and B, because he's bobbins!!!!

The All blacks being full of 'foreigners' is a great myth. You don't need Maori or British heritage to qualify as an NZer. The only exceptions have been Rokocoko, Sivivatu and Devine (rarely more than 1 on the field at once). Its like saying England poached Dallaglio from Italy.

To get back on the thread topic, we all seem to agree that Coney is guilty of abysmal commentating not racial bigotry

Probably true - I don't think Coney was being deliberately racist either - but, as an Englishman, I can only begin to imagine the chaos that would ensue if someone commented that Monty wasn't really English because his family were immigrants... Even if they didn't really mean it in a derogatory way.
