Rain has just ended day 1 of the first test of england v new zealand.

So there was a rainy period at the start and no morning session but the rest went pretty well may I say.

109/5 at tea and they could have been looking at 170ish.

208/6 though I think is a fair reflection and McCullum was as good as ever, mind you so were the england bowlers.

Sister Karen, my old moustachioed Matron, I never realised that you advocated barefaced dishonesty.
Strauss is in a desperate and quantifiable slump,
Vaughan is a slow witted drone and your lover KP is a squeaky-voiced, celebrity obsessed, overrated hairdresser from overseas.
Why should I describe them any other way, you awful old droopy drawers.

Strauss has hit two 150's in recent weeks (last test in NZ, FP trophy match for middlesex). Vaughan has (for England) not converted starts in the last 2 series and Pietersen has two centuries in recent weeks (last NZ test and a CC game with Hampshire). Not worried about any of our batters bar Colly and thats purely due to his shoulder.

England blew it after a great start yesterday. Sidebottom was poor given the conditions and Vaughan showed he may have "lost it" as a leader as well. After a great start on a bowlers paradise, New Zealand showed real grit and anything over 250 will be a fine effort. I doubt England would have managed 100-6 on that pitch in those conditions. Strange that England looked the inexperienced side. Theses are the sort of conditions New Zealand's bowlers will be very familiar with. This is looking like a cracking match already.

I dont think Sidebottom was poor - he was the most consistent of the bowlers but not got his reward of picking a wicket up.

I really hope Kiwis can push toward the 300+ mark and get a grip on this Test Match.

McCullum has taken over from Gilchrist as the number one wicketkeeper who is also a dangerous batsman who has the ability to score a run a ball when the team is under pressure. Also watch out for Brad Haddin who will make his Test debut against the West Indies very soon.

To be fair, it was a cracking knock by Breeendin McCalllom, but he didnt deserve his centuary because he couldn't hold his nerve at the vital time.

Well done Monty, very important wicked for England!

McCallum is great for test cricket, just as Gilchrist was. Whereas Gilchrist actually did open the batting for his district cricket side in OZ, McCallum isnt that good which makes his acchievemnts recently even more worthwhile.
And I cant wait for Haddin to make his mark - he actually holds the record for the most sixes hit in an innings in a State Cricket Match in OZ, I think he belted over 250 in less than a day. Exciting stuff.

To be fair McCullum should have been gone on about 94 - Monty had him plum but Bucknor didnt give it.

Broad looked good - i hope he keeps on improving and keeps Harmison out of the side forever.
