Day in the life of a 49er star

comment on the article

It's all very easy for us armchair Olympic fans. We switch on the TV when the Games start and expect our athletes to perform miracles, berating the screen when they fail to meet our expectations.

But how much do we really know about what they have put in to get there?

Back in March I visited the British Olympic sailing team's winter base in Palma, Majorca, to film some guides to the sport ahead of Beijing.

Whie I was there I caught up with 49er stars Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, who won the world and European championships last year and are genuine medal contenders this summer.

The colourful pair gave me the lowdown in their own inimitable fashion on a typical day in their training.

Do you have any thoughts? Any questions? Any opinions on how Britain will do in Beijing?

Britain will excel in China, as it has in every major regatta for the last 8 years because we have the best training program. This will not change as long as the sponsors and money keeps coming in.

Makes you wonder why a few other sports can't learn from the excellence shown by the sailors and cyclists!

Our seafaring and riverfaring athletes are tip top but the rest of our athletes are useless and wouldn't know what a gold medal is.

I expect the GB squad to pick up less than 5 gold medals in China which is a disgrace.

One of the few people ever to beat the legendary Robert Scheidt. A true legend.

Team GBR spend more on sailing than Ireland spend on our entire Olympic Programme. It really puts us to shame. Although maybe we'd have more funds if our Health Service wasn't in such a mess, and all our politicians didn't have such a nast habit of stealing money from the government!
