Kelly Pavlik - Time to Step up in Weight?

by Ninarx (U4665650) 14 May 2008
comment on the article

Recently there has been a lot of hype about Pavlik stepping up to super middleweight, but is there really any point? I think there is no reason for him to stay at middleweight any longer. With no real fights out there for him in the division it's time he steps up.

After he disposes of Lockett, where next is it for Kelly?

The fight most people want to see if Pavlik vs Calzaghe, however this does not seem to be a fight that is ever going to happen. Joe Calzaghe is too busy hunting down the big legend names to add to his CV, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr, possibly Antonio Tarver, these are fighters past their prime who have established themselves already and frankly do not pose TOO much of a threat to Joe (not at this stage of their careers).

The other fight that could happen and seems popular is Froch vs Pavlik, again this however doesn't seem like it could happen since Cobra Carl is very focused on Joe Calzaghe, getting that fight, it's the fight he desperately wants (hopefully it won't turn into a Witter style obsession), besides Froch has not proven himself at a world level yet (Denis Inkin would have been his chance, but since no top 10 fighters wanted to face him he got stuck with Rybacki) so the fight isn't really in Pavlik's interest.

So where could he go? With no real fights at super middleweight, not that many options at light heavyweight (since big names like Tarver and Jones are after Calzaghe) and the only other fighter in the division now worth going after being Dawson (who isn't a huge draw), my question is this...

Could Kelly Pavlik step all the way up to heavyweight?

I'm not saying he should jump straight up there by any means, but he could take a few tune up fights on the way possibly (Dawson at light heavy for example). At 6'2" Pavlik is a very tall middleweight, he's got the hand speed, power and skills, and if he can bring some of that with him I think he could stand a decent chance in such a lacklustre division. Roy Jones Jr is only 5'11" and he fights at light heavy and has fought (for a world title) at heavy, Tyson only 5'9", even Haye is just 6'2" so Pavlik wouldn't be at a huge disadvantage physically if he could put on the weight.

He's still a young fighter with plenty of time left in him, is now the time for Pavlik to take the risk? Take a big step up in weight? And challenge some of the bigger fighters? or do you think that would be a step too far?

I'd be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on this.

Pavlik beat Taylor twice who beat Hopkins twice who Cazlaghe beat.

They are both undefeated and if I know boxing, ones thing for sure you can never write that fight off.

I remember people saying Mayweather would never fight Hatton, he doesn't need to, but in the end he needed to. At the moment it might not be on the horizon, but if Cazlaghe whups Jones, which I fully expect him to, it will be much easier than the Hopkins fight, and Pavlik whups Abraham, which is not in doubt, then come 2009 we could a huge world mega fight on our hands. The undefeated experienced pro against The undefeated young hungy Lion. It will be both fighters career defining fight, and all those doubters out there, watch this space.

I'm not certain Pavliks that proven to be honest, and I think there are a lot of super middleweights who will fancy their chances against him.

He did beat Taylor twice, but Taylors only real claim to glory was beating an over the top Hopkins, barely. He had been looking jaded and lacklustre against the likes of Cory Spinks, a beefed up welter before getting bashed up by Pavlik. His bout against Edison Miranda was stunning, all action, it could have been held in a phone booth. However unless I'm mistaken Pavlik himself tasted the canvas in that fight, and he remains a fighter susceptible to being hit.

I like Pavlik, but I don't think he's imfallible. I think Kessler would welcome a bout with him. There are a lot of good fighters at SM, Kessler, Bute, Froch, Pascal. He may as well see how he likes it with a few of these.

He could move straight to light heavy I guess, he's big enough to, but that division is practically a graveyard, Hopkins, tarver, calzaghe, Johnson are all old men. There is only Dawson and he's no more than an average fighter in a below average division.

Tyson 5'9"?

Did he really lose that much stature in prison? laugh Surely 5'11"-6'!

As for Pavlik moving up... well, maybe, but he's 6'2" at middleweight... it's not the height that's the problem but the probability that this is his comfort zone (ie. the heavyweight guys are naturally bigger).

As others have said, lots of other good fights at MW/SMW and potentially LW. A jump to HW is not inconceivable in the longterm but pretty unlikely, at least in the short-medium term.

Pavlik is a great fighter - all action. I'd love to see him fight Froch and winner to face Calzaghe. But probably won't happen.

Such a stupid thread... Heavyweight? Lmao

By the way... Apparently Roy Jones Jnr wants too much money for the fight and is pricing himself out, so Calzaghe vs Pavlik at super-middle looks quite likely!

COME ON JOE!!!!!

I don't think Calzaghe will win if he has to lose that half stone off. I have a nasty feeling he's on the slide, and his last two fights have taken a lot out of him. Forget Pavlik Joe, face the winner of Tarver v Dawson, whichever is victorious its an easy win for Joe!

Nobody wants to see an easy win for Joe!

We want to see him in a fight that will further enhance his career or he may as well reitire.

I'll forgive Roy Jones, even though he is a has-been, because of the legend he was and the fact that even today US fight fans think he will whup Joe. BUT if Joe wants to really cement his legacy, he has to beat the best of the rest in their prime, and at the moment that is looking like Kelly Pavlik.

"Taylors only real claim to glory was beating an over the top Hopkins, barely"

and calzaghe's real claim to glory? lacy and mikael kessler?

or is it the 21 defences and undefeated tag for over a decade? i'm sure other fighters in europe have done the same.

Kesslers a class fighter, and beating him is no mean feat. lacy was a heavy favourite before the fight, only in hindsight did people start saying he was poor, before the fight 90% of people were picking him by ko. Add this to victories over Robin Reid and Byron Mitchell and Calzaghes ledger is wholely more respectable than either Taylors or Pavliks for me.

Would love to see Calzaghe v Pavlik. Joe can still get down to 168 + Pavlik fought at 165 against Taylor.

As for Pavlik moving up to heavyweight...!!
