Kolpaks or Flatpaks?

County cricket Northants
comment on the article

Well we know we have too many of them but we also know our English guys cant do it as well, and we cant afford ones who can. The Kolpaks hit the ground running with performances and keep coaches in jobs whilst the flatplaks, English kids that need time, money and investment in youth and coaching, tend, often to just hit the ground...

I personally prefer to milk the Kolpaks until the ECB clamp down...Its Hall or Wigley, Ackerman or Rob White...

Well were not doing too bad with kolpacks are we. id rather have everyone moaning at us but win something than have no-one moaning and not win anything for yet another season. Our kolpaks win games for us now, wheras Nelson, Wakley etc need the time to improve and develop.

think the leicester chairman is talking the most sense on this subject.his article on there website is spot on.basically he doesnt want his team to be cannon fodder so he is using kolpaks to strenghen and aid younger players and win games!also if "all" counties recived similiar amounts from ecb then we could attract and retain english players. he rightly says two divisions have created the haves and have nots in terms of players and money.i would love more local players at our club ,and can see the argument that they block english players coming through so its all about balance. we are not breaking any rules, till the ecb change them!

Durham have stuck with local lads and have been up and down and Glamorgan have been anti Kolpak and hav ebeen woeful. I think we are too Kolpak right now but the cost of the English version of VDW would be 100k plus.

Playing devil's advocate here...

How many trophies do the likes of Northants and Leicestershire think they are going to win with Kolpak players? Personally I think the only thing you guys can win is the Twenty/20. If/when you do win will it be received well by the members/supporters of the club i.e. will it not be considered a 'hollow victory'. Also do you not think it would be worthwhile to go through a period of playing young local players as its not as iff you can get relegated from Div 2.

I would love to see us competing for honours as much as anyone, but the 'short term' Kolpak approach is so wrong.
A lot of people seem to be saying that the youngsters need time to develop, this may be true, but the best way for them to develop is to throw them in the deep end, then let's see where they are in 3 years time.
We've had years of poor results with Kolpaks, and where are we now? Exactly where we were 3 years ago.
I applaud the stance taken by Glamorgan and Warwickshire, they are looking to the future and probably expecting 3 years of struggle but with long term gain.
Can someone tell me how Graeme White is supposed to 'develop' playing for Rushden against Wollaston??

The poor results were nothing to do with the Kolpak (bar Charl Pietersen)players, but the English guys in their places. We have bought in guys in the last three years that wouldnt be good enough for pro cricket not 5 seven years ago. This is an alarming trend at Northampton and we all breatheda sigh of relief when Hall and VDW got the nod. Make no mistake, without them its bottom of the lot. We cant afford to have the English player equivelent of the Kolpak ...
