Downward spiral since 2005!

England

We have an abundance of talent in all areas but we just seem to be inconsistent and lack a clinical edge to our play sometimes. I think since the Ashes 2005 when we were at the peak of our game we have totally lost everything we built up then, I kind of think that Peter Moores is having to go through a stage of rebuilding at the moment. I think we genuinely miss Simon Jones and he has been irreplaceable, we have never found that 4th seamer to replace him, Jimmy Anderson, Liam Plunkett, Saj Mahmood, and others have not lived up to expectations. Marcus Trescothick leaves a huge void which Cook and Vaughan have not filled as a partnership. Vaughan needs to get runs which he hasn't done on a consistent basis for over 4 years! I think we could increase the performance of the side by giving others a go, I would like to see Carberry given a chance and also Solanki or Key given another chance as both have been treated awfully. Owais Shah needs a chance in the middle order, by doing this I think we would be creating competition for places and therefore people would not rest on their laurels.

Are you serious? You drop any of the current batting line up and replace them with a name you have mentioned, and your weakening the team badly. Solanki can't cut it at Test level, Key had his moment and Shah will just have to wait for now and keep improving his game.

I don't like all this putting down of Vaughan. Just wait and see, he'll win us back the Ashes.

The only thing that will stop Australia from sweeping the series... again, is the lousy English weather.

The England Test side are a bit of a mess at the moment. Vaughan is definately clinging to the fading memory of 2005. He'll retire from the international game after the third Test next year and will join the ICL.

As for the rest of the side:

Trescothick - pulled a heart muscle, game over.
Strauss - averaging 20, but looking good in the nets!
Vaughan - see above.
KP - In a slump, but might make a few runs.
Bell - an ok player, but nothing special.
Collingwood - will be lucky to be there.
G.Jones - replaced by a revolving door policy regarding the selection of "English" wicket-keepers.
Flintoff - a mighty worrior well past his best.
Hoggard - currently out of favour.
Giles - no comment.
Harmison - done like a dog's dinner.
S.Jones - sadly, finished. If he was a racehorse, he would've been shot by now!

That's the class of 2005. The make-up of the 2009 side still remains to be seen, but I'm not holding my breath for them to be anything special.

The Aussies will dominate in 2009 and I can't wait!

opening-bat-333:
Solanki has never played test match cricket, so how you can say that he can't cut it at Test match level is tosh!
Rob Key has scored a double hundred in tests and is one of the most prolific county run scorers. And what does Owais Shah have to do to get in the team!!!!! Our batting line up is not chosen on form, it is chosen on reputation, if you start replacing the Vaughan's, Strauss's etc. with the men who are scoring 100's for their counties week in week out, i.e. Ramprakash, then surely competition for places would be greater and performance would increase!!!

Yes and why not. England are on home soil and still have the nucleus of the team that won in 2005 - they have enough time and just like our rugby union team keep beating the Aussies, I see no reason why we cannot win again!

ENGLAND WILL WIN IN 2009 AND I CAN'T WAIT!

What rubbish! England have the talent? Who are you kidding? England barely beat New Zealand recently and were shown up by India and Sri Lanka only a little further back. Who in the England side could make the Australian side? Possibly Pietersen, Sidebottom and Cook - and thats if there were injuries to let them in!

Stop talking about 2005 and think about the 5-0 series drubbing that followed.

Vaughan should stay in the current team for 2009 as he seems to be able to look the Aussies in the eye, one of the few who can.

Cook is a leader of the future, Strauss is on borrowed time, Bell is a good county player, Collingwood the same, Anderson isnt good enough, Broad is too young and Monty is still not good enough to be a test player.

As for the WK position - who will be next on the roundabout?

Ok then redvan49... what should do you think the team should be,
if you think England have such little talent, I would love to see what team you would field!!
Vaughan may be able to look the Aussies in the eye but ever since 2003 he hasn't been very prolific against them or anyone!
Come on you pessimistic 'fan' what would your team be!!!!

Ideally I would like to see:

Cook
Trescothick (once Vaughan goes, he'll be back)
Shah
Petierson
Bell
Collingwood
Ambrose
Broad
Rashid
Sidebottom
Hoggard
Jones

Vaughans on borrowed time, Strauss is an apalling waste of talent, and Flintoff wont be fit. Vaughan is half the problem for Trescothick so plead with him to come back, England havent been the same without him.
The only problem is that you never know what stars the Aussies are about to throw up. Hussey, Clark, Ponting, a rejuvinated Katich, Haddin etc.. will all be hard to get out. And by then, Johnson, Clark, Tait and Lee will be quite a handful.

I am disappointed with the fact that very people give Simon Jones any credit for what he did in the 2005 ashes. All people keep talking about is Flintoff but i feel a fully fit Simon Jones is better than Flintoff. Simon Jones is the only english bowler who can swing the ball however he likes it. Australians are notoriously poor at playing against genuine swing bowling.

Trescothick will not be back, I have the greatest respect for him but his illness will prevent him coming back and I hope he enjoys the rest of his career at somerset.

Vaughan has averaged over 40 since his return from a Knee injury which is normally the mark of a good test player. He needs runs as he had a poor start to the county season and the media have got after him.

I like Rob Key but he has scored 31 from 15 tests including 221 so if you discount that then his average is even lower.

Shah has played 31 ODI and he only averages 26.00 even lower than Vaughan so im sick of hearing how good he is

sonofthedestroyer, try telling that to Mike Hussey. He has eaten English conditions for breakfast in his county days.
