The BBC and its fairness in sport

comment on the article

I find it very strange that one of the most innovative competitions is not being given due coverage by the BBC. The number of people all over the world watching and following the IPL is almost as big as the following for the World Cup yet the BBC have chosen to sidestep coverage.

Is there an ulterior motive or is there an unspoken prejudice?

Blame Vaughan and central contracts for the lack of IPL coverage. I'm sure Swamy would agree with me! Everything is Vaughan's fault! laugh

It's a foreign domestic competition with no England players in a form of the game that attracts minimal attention in England.

remind me what British Cricket tournaments are shown on the BBC. I for one would be thoroughly hacked off if the Beeb decided to spend a load of money on rights for the IPL/ICL whatever when they are not willing to do so Test Cricket.

The OP needs to lose the chip on his shoulder.

Unspoken prejudice - I can see how very, very desperate you are for that to be true.

Try this.

The IPL has put heavy restrictions on who can have photos / videos of IPL. Why would the BBC want to pay for pictures of an Indian domestic tournament?

They charge for supplying the score feeds, why would the BBC want to pay for them?

IPL is an Indian domestic competition - I don't see anything innovative about it, it's just an over-long T20 tournament. If they wanted to be innovative they should have made the coverage free to all the world. Who is being prejudiced there?

The worldwide audience for IPL is small compared to say the CWC.

So the ulterior motive is that it's just not a big enough event to warrant coverage in Britain by the BBC.

When u talk about IPL BBC comes out with some pathetic lame excuses. with the internet set to rule media, bbc ike the ebc need to get their heads out of the sand, they are closer to history than future.

The bbc is a waste of time on coverage! They want to look at themselves and realise, no one watches golf , its the most boring sport ever! The bbc are more intrested in covering boring sports- golf and football, sorry(kicikng a bag of wind around a field and childish behaviour which follows it is not fun!)than covering good, entertaining sports - cricket and winter sports. The IPL cricket league should be shown in accordance to law

Football maybe boring to you but the amount of people watching is far greater than cricket will ever be. Perhaps more people watch golf as well? Certainly more people watch it than IPL cricket.

Look, i'am not anti BBC, just trying to wake them up. Ok they have no right to show IPL matches, but why not a mention on teletext? When bhaji got banned it was reported on teletext and breakfast tv. it is this child like stubborn attitude. their use new technology is lagging, they are failing to engage vast audiences, it is failing as a global brand cos it does not do as it says on the tin

relax_singh - you just need to wake up to the fact that in context of global sport, IPL is small change. It's really not a big deal in most of the world.

Why should the BBC be a 'global brand'? It has a duty to the licence payers to achieve value for the money it spends not to try to rival News Corp or whoever.

Do also I detect a little bending of definitions:
'boring sports' = one's I don't like
'exciting sports' = one's I do like??

The BBC has to bid for the right to broadcast certain sports and, due to its commercial limitations and the need to broadcast things other than sports, can't put up the sums to
compete with the likes of Murdoch.
The BBC can't even show the cricket that happens on its own doorstep; why should it 'have' to bother about a domestic league in another country?

Anyway, I suspect that, over the next few days, more people in the UK will be interested in the score from Lord's than the IPL.
