v Yorkshire

County championship Durham
comment on the article

If there isn't a significant improvement in the batting then this game could make for painful viewing.
With a bit of luck Hoggard will be selected for England because we have seen just what happens when those batsmen come across world-class bowlers and Yorkshire are strong enough without him causing carnage.
With the luck we have had Yorkshire will probably bat first and Hoggard will be released by England and make it back in time for out first innings. If we bat first we should only have to face him once because the chances are that 10 wickets wil have fallen by the time he gets to the ground!

The easiest problem to solve should be the running between the wickets-Di Venuto has been run out 3 times already and on each occasion the fault was with the batsman at the other end.

I'd also move Coetzer down the order to try and release some pressure. He's not making any runs and can't bat at number 3. Benkenstein is the best player and the one most likely to be able to hold things together so he should bat 3. Neil McKenzie's disastrous form is a real worry, hopefull he will come good.

If they can bat reasonably well and give the bowlers anything to work with then things might turn around. However, it there are anymore collapses of if Yorkshire make a good score in their first innings then I think the only question will be whether we lose inside 3 days or 4!

Thanks captaincolly. Sometimes I think cricket is no longer the simple game of my (almost forgotten) youth

If you remember, last season Lancs did it against us, England released Anderson, who cam to the ground and replaced Newby

What's the point of England announcing the starting X1 early and then making Hoggard stay until the toss has taken place?
They may as well have waited until the morning of the match before announcing the side.

I suppose it’s in case of any last minute injuries, captaincolly.

I thought this was interesting (from http://www.lords.org/laws-and-spirit/laws-of-cricket/laws/)...

2. Nomination of players
Each captain shall nominate his players in writing to one of the umpires before the toss. No player may be changed after the nomination without the consent of the opposing captain.

It seems that Durham must have agreed to Hoggard’s late arrival. Very sporting of them.

The ideal day so far-reached 400 despite the early loss of Di Venuto and taken 3 quick wicket including the vital one of McGrath.
This is the time when the bowlers and fielders have got to hammer this advantage home and not let Yorkshire back into the game.

On a different topic-Garry Park is the 12th man in the test match. I've just seen him on Sky.

He must be English-qualified, it'd be funny though if someone has made a blunder.

Some annoying partnerships in the Yorkshire lower-order but Bresnan and Rashid are proper batsmen and we are only playing 3 specialist seamers.
It's surely a match-winning lead. I'm a bit concerned as to why Ben Harmison opened the batting instead of Di Venuto. It would be absolutely disastrous if Diva has been injured-probably won't matter if he doesn't bat in this innings but if it's anything more than a niggle we are in trouble.

I asked MCC this last year when it came about in the Lancs game, it appears there is a different ruling with regards the LVCC

It is all on the ECB website.
The below is part of the LVCC playing regulations for 2008
"6.2 Law 1.2 - Nomination of players
The following shall apply in addition to Law 1.2:
If after a Captain has nominated his players, it is
discovered that someone who was not on the list has
acted in the match as though a nominated player,
then, if consent is not given by the opposing Captain
(not to be unreasonably withheld) for the original
nomination to be changed, the offender shall take no
further part in the match and no substitute, including
the original nominated player shall be allowed"
