England - New Zealand 1st Test

comment on the article

This is the match thread for the first test of the series between England and New Zealand

I will provide live updates about all the key moments throughout the test match, including wickets and key incidents

Match - England vs New Zealand, 1st test
Date - 15/05/2008 - 19/05/2008
Start Time - 11.00 am (English Time)
Venue - Lord's
Captains -
England - Michael Vaughan
New Zealand - Daniel Vettori

The pitch - One of the most distinctive and famous features of the Lord's ground is the significant slope across the field. The north-west side of the playing surface is some eight feet higher than the south-east side. This slope causes appreciable deviation in bounce of the ball on the pitch, making it easier to move the ball in to right-handed batsmen when bowling from the Pavilion End, and easier to move it away when bowling from the Nursery End.

rob when I meant bowlers I meant really good. Mills is usually really good in ODI's, not sure why. Oram is just as niggardly as in tests and Patel I rate higher than Swann. And NZ's tail enders can all clear the boundary (Martin won't be playing). If the ball swings the English attack will edge it especially if Jimmy A brings his A game. If he brings his other one...

Also our explosive batsman are littered throughout the order where England's if KP fails are Mustard at the top and Wright and Masca at the end. The trend in 50 is that people are playing more aggressively for a longer period of time. Maybe England will mess with the order but if Cook plays and gets 70 off 110 balls he will have placed massive pressure on the others. Even, How can score rapidly if need be.

But agree I think it will be an entertaining series.

ochuckles - Oram is a danger is ODI, as is Mills

but as you said, if it swings, Siders and Jimmy can be lethal, Broad is always capable of picking up wickets, Swann can pick up wickets, and Wright, Colly, Masceranas can all pick up wickets

Cook is the anchor of the team, Mustard, Bell and KP are the attackers at the top of the order, then Shah and Colly can rebuild the innings if needed, and finally Wright/Masceranas, Broad and Swann can all smash lower order runs

Robs how about this, if the games are low scoring I favor England if they are high scoring I favor NZ.

Ultimately we will just have to wait for the series itself to see about our predictions.

Hopefully though NZ remain competitive in the Test series.

ochuckles - that sounds fair enough ok

I just hope the rain lays off until the series is finished grr

I think New Zealand will put up a 100% fight in each game they play, they may not be the best but there will always try and make an effort ok

Arn't we reading a little too much into the first Test??

Rain was the spoilsport and neither side was really stretched

The only good news is both coming tests will have an impact on the series and hold spectator interest

medium pacer - New Zealand will be carrying a lot of confidence from the Lords result, I dont think they would have won it, but they sure could have lost it

New Zealand will be happier with the draw than England will ok

How does the forecast look for Friday,

It would be good to see an un-interupted five days and let the players decide who is the stronger at this stage.

Cheers ale
