Garcia ends win drought in style

PGA Tour
comment on the article

Sergio Garcia did his finances, self-confidence and Ryder Cup chances a power of good by coming from three shots down on the final day to win the Players Championship at Sawgrass.

The 28-year-old held his nerve under pressure to beat Paul Goydos in a play-off and bring to an end the longest win drought of his career.

So do you think the Spaniard has snapped out of his slump and is worth a place in Nick Faldo's Ryder Cup team, or will you take a bit more convincing than that about his form?

Your thoughts and opinions please...

There is no way Sergio would have been left out of the Ryder Cup team, he has a superb record in the event and other than sinking enough putts he hasn't been playing badly... just not fulfilling his potential.

who on earth said that garcia was not worth a ryder cup spot? he is the best ball striker europe has and one of the best overall europeans even in an apparant slump!

Surprising if not silly question really, as I can't image Europe leaving Sergio off the Ryder Cup team. Sergio is an immense individual talent, but he is an even better team player. He brings great enthusiasm to the team, and at the moment, that's something the American team doesn't have. Perhaps someone like Boo can provide similar spark to their team if he makes the team.

As for Sergio compared to Scott, both are great young players with very similar winning records, but the fact that Sergio has seriously contended in the majors a lot more often than Scott has makes Sergio the more accomplished player than Scott at the moment.

What a ridiculous question! Garcia, like all the Spaniards raise their game against the Americans. Whoever thought this up, obviously knows nothing about golf!
Adam Scott is too erratic to win a major at the moment. Sergio will have 2 before Scott wins a major.

in response 2up2toplay

you have totally misunderstood my post.
if you read it again i said that it would have been good for Goydos to win on a personal level but im merely looking at the bigger picture here.

i believe PGA Tour players have a responsibility to protray golf in a positive way. id say Goydos is a millionaire given the money involved in golf now, but yet he chose to wear a shirt that was 4 four times to big for him and a pair of white/cream slacks that were brought from tk-max. does Goydos inspire you? or would he inspire a young boy/girl to take up golf? no is the answer!

its the garcia's and woods' of this world that inspire the young to take up golf. because they look like sportsmen, they are atheltic and stylish. golf needs to keep progressing and moving away from the sterotype of brandy drinking and cigar smoking. it needs to move away from it being protrayed as a game and being viewed as a sport.

if golf is being viewed as sport then the young will want to play it.

goydos doesnt look like an athelte nor does he care if he does or not. and furthermore nor does he care about the responsibilities he has as a PGA Tour player.

for the record i earn 25k a yr and a member of a golf whos yearly fee is £550. i dont live in a world of elitism!

Niall 29, I presume you have the same dislike for Clarke, Westwood, Els & Monty as you do for Goydos. None of them look like athletes. You know, now that I think of it neither does Nicklaus, Watson, Norman, Faldo or basically any player over 40. Should we ask them all to leave the stage so as we can watch Casey & Poulter because they dress well & look like athletes.
Young people are inspired by greatness, in any shape or form. They will watch winners. That is why they would take up golf. Not watching someone in a flashy outfit shanking his way around Augusta.
As for the original question on Sergio, his Ryder Cup record is 14-3-3 he has the best strike rate (70%) in the history of the tournament. That includes 7 straight wins in the foursomes format. How could he not be picked?

Apologies, his Ryder Cup record including the K Club is now 18-3-4. Did the author not do any research before asking a rather dumb question.

Hello all keen golf fans I'm new to 606 but I read all your comments.

In response to Niall29's comments I must admit that Goydos's shirt did look a bit ragged laugh
