Performance that matters

International Tests Australia India
comment on the article

Australia has been the most dominant cricket team for about 15 years. For batsmen, the ultimate test is their performance vs Australia. Here are batting averages for current test cricketers vs Australia. Using >40 as the measure of quality, only 10 batsmen have made the cut.

South Africa's dismal failure vs Australia might be attributable to fragile batting as the stats show.

S. Tendulkar 56.0
V Sehwag 53.9
K. Pietersen 53.5
VVS Laxman 50.6
S Chanderpaul 48.4
M Vaughan 47.9
R Dravid 45.8
K Sangakkara 41.9
P Collingwood 40.9
D Bravo 40.4
------------------
J Kallis 38.3
H Bashar 35.2
R Sarwan 32.5
M Jayawardene 32.3
A Strauss 32.0
Younis Khan 31.8
S Ganguly 31.7
H Gibbs 31.6
T Samarawera 31.2
A Prince 30.3
T Dilshan 30.1
----------------
M Yousuf 29.6
C Gayle 28.9
A Cook 27.6
M Samuels 25.3
I Bell 25.1
M Boucher 25.0

The article now displays current averages, CC.

Chanderpaul has improved his average vs Aus from 38 to 48 in the past series.

His overall average is climbing with every series. He thoroughly deserves to be in the average of 50 or more block of players.

ChanderPaul is right now as Fred Truman would say, in his pomp, I have no doubt he will finish his TEst career with an above 50 average - most deserving quiet unsung player with an odd stance to be there I suppose (above 50 bracket)

Shiv has a splendid average of 57.5 at home although his 'away' average is not too shabby at 42.3.

This might just be his best year.

Interestingly, he batted well below his best when he was the skipper.

Since 1 Feb 1993, Australia has not lost a home series. If we examine the performances of touring batsmen in Australia and limit the analysis to those that played at least 10 tests, only 4 batsmen have averaged >40 runs - 3 Indians and an Englishman. Lara played the most tests in Australia, but averaged only 37 runs.

A bit amusing finding that Kumble averaged 22.8 from 10 tests in Australia!

Thanks for that link SC

If you take away the period filter, all time Barrington the battler tops, along with Sutcliffe, Hobbs, Hammond, Tendulker

That is pretty good company

That's interesting; isn't it, youngTommyB, that Vettori averages more runs vs Aus than Graemme Smith, AB de Villiers and Dippenaar?

MP, Thanks for the historical analysis of batsmen vs Aus.

I believe Australia and England were the dominant teams during the times of Sutcliffe, Hammond and Hobbs, and perhaps during the era of Barrington as well. Australia has also been the most dominant team during the entire career of Tendulkar barring the first two years (91-93). Hence, I would say the records of Tendulkar and Laxman deserve respect.

As for Edrich, Gooch, Gower, Gavaskar, Lloyd, Haynes, etc., they sometimes faced Aussie teams that were not the most dominant. Some of these played several tests against Australia during a time the latter did not win a series for four consecutive years (teams captained by Hughes and Border).

It is interesting that Haynes averaged only 32, Cowdrey 36, and Gooch 33. Gooch, I recall, performed well vs WI.
