Sticking with Managers.

Championship Nottingham Forest
comment on the article

Look at teams that have stuck with Managers that were under pressure.

Forest (Colin Calderwood) - Promotion
Stoke (Tony Pulis) - Promotion
WBA (Tony Mowbray) - Promotion

All the above now have continuity, stabilty and progression.

If you want a good example of panic sacking - Look at Leicester.

What do they have now. Relegation and turmoil.

So those who wanted CC out are you now happy to admit you were wrong and that it was just a knee-jerk reaction?

I'm not trying to be a WUM here, but just a few observations of mine.

As a pretty much neutral fan and lover of football, I have been to a fair few games around the country, so when I came to Nottingham Uni I thought forest, theres a big old club, might get to see a few decent games there. First one I went to (I forget who), Forest start well and then concede a goal. Team booed off at half time. Second half - awful football, team booed off. Went again, pre-match, lots of criticism of CC in the stands, team play well and win, cheer, but fans still bitch bout CC. Over the dozen or so games I've been to in the past few years, always the same, fans never satisfied. Like I say, not trying to be a WUM here, but I was absolutely shocked and appauled by many the forest 'fans', I've never seen anything like it at other clubs I have been to. Just because Forest won big under a legendary manager well before many of us were born, does not mean the club has a divine right to success now, and the sooner some people realise that the better. CC has done what was asked, and has brought some stability to a club that sheds managers more often than tress drop leaves, and club that has freefalled like this needs stability and fans united behind the team, through thick and thin. To be on the guys back after he has delivered promotion is unbeleivable. A city like Nottingham should have a top flight prescence, and I think given time and support CC could be the man to bring that, as well as finally stopping Forest from seeming like a self righteous joke to those not connected to the club.

For quite a few years now, Forest have been in an unacceptably low league position. Many fans vented their frustration at the manager because the team weren't ever really in a dominant position to regain a Championship place. At the end, it was out of Forest's hands as to whether they went up or not, relying on (the blessed) Cheltenham Town winning against Doncaster.

That said, Colin Calderwood and his team didn't really deserve the amount of stick they received, especially after January. When you consider the eventual outcome, there are a number of positives to take from what turned out to be a successful season.

Good luck to Colin for next season though, as I still think he has work to do to finally win the crowd over (and there will always be some that are never satisfied!)

Boulevarder - your comments are pretty accurate, to be fair. The fans need to be behind the manager and team, win or lose.
However, with 8 or 9 games to go this season I was one of those who started to lose patience also. I felt that at no time during the season had the team put a decent run together - fortunately for us we did this in the run-in.
I still have concern that once we are a goal down we are out of the game (at least in terms of winning it) but, we are up and we shall see.
The soft centre of the side that resulted in a number of high scoring defeats the previous season (none more embarassing than Yeovil in the play offs)has been rectified, at least.
A few additions to the squad and you never know.
CC got us up, avoiding the play offs and you cant ask for more than that.

Let's get this straight here - I'm not a CC fan, I don't think he's up to it BUT all credit to him for getting us up even if he did it the hard way after losing big big matches. Carlisle home, Doncaster away for starters. He's earned his shot for managing the team in the Championship but, a lot will depend on who he signs & how well they fit in. He hasn't the best track of signing good players not to say he hasn't signed anyone good. We'll see over the summer how things turn out but for now he's got my backing even though he's not been convincing. All the best because you'll be needing it.
P.S. I don't think we'll do a Bristol City & charge to the PO but who knows what will happen... We definatly won't be doing a Derby...

I was doubting him. It came down to the last game weather this season was a success or not at the end of the day, and he pulled through. Just. I'll eat my humble flavoured pie. But at times this season the tactics were questionable. And all you people claiming you had full faith in CC's ability, need to get off your high horse. He put in a good run, but ultimately, it was Carlisle & Donny who gave Forest promotion, they had it in the bag. But he still got the job done. Still think, we should of walked away with this league IMO, and I would like someone to defy any of the points i have made. Cus I'll rip you apart, because Im right smiley lol.

I never expected this but the bombshell has dropped - Commons has left the CG!!! It's official & all over the web already. Not what he was saying last summer. I can't help wondering if CC has a part to play in it (with his tactics)

Couldn't agree more about manager stablity, and this is from a "deluded" Newcastle fan.
However, it is great that Forest have been promoted, but i do think their "Calderwood out" chants were slighlty justified. I live in notts and have been to many games and their fans do have high expectations. They did win the European Cup TWICE, even if it was 25+ years ago the fans will never forget that. Although it was stupid calling for a managers sacking when they were still in the playoffs, but it showed that the players needed to improve and they did, so maybe it worked on some level. Also good ridance to Kris Commons, judas and a fraud.

In absolute fairness to the criticism, Forest should have been promoted last year and have been challenging for the title this year. I speak as a Northampton Town. Bearing in mind 3 go up from League Two, we should have been automatically promoted in at least his second year, not messing about with the playoffs. I’m not anti-CC, but he’s not the most dynamic attacking manager in the league. I predict that he’ll do well in consolidating Forest’s position in the Championship, but I can’t see him doing much more than that. Good luck for next year though.
