Premier League set for frantic finale

Premier League
comment on the article

Manchester United to seal the Premier League with victory at Wigan. Fulham to survive with a win at Portsmouth.

The Premier League's frantic final day finish will be the subject of discussion around the world this weekend.

Predictions and permutations will be the order of the day - so it would be rude not to weigh in with mine, which will undoubtedly spell doom for both Manchester United and Fulham!

What this weekend does is emphatically give the lie to Kevin Keegan's widely-publicised claim that the Premier League is in danger of becoming boring.

Sunday afternoon will be many things, but boring will not be one of them.

The facts of the matter are that Manchester United and Fulham are in the favoured positions. They know exactly what they have to do to control their own destiny.

Chelsea, Birmingham and Reading can all achieve their goals but must wait on events elsewhere before the celebrations or commiserations begin.

Wigan have made all the right noises about knocking United's title bandwagon off course, and no-one should doubt the professionalism of manager Steve Bruce.

He will have his players fired up for a big finish, and no amount of friendship with Sir Alex Ferguson will alter that.

But a multi-talented United side needing to win a single match to seal a title is not a force to go against, and I expect them to get the three points they need to finish top on goal difference from Chelsea.

The bottom end could be an even more frenetic affair as Fulham, Birmingham and Reading fight to avoid the drop.

Roy Hodgson is on the brink of a footballing miracle with Fulham, not just with the results he has achieved but the manner in which he has achieved them.

When talk turns to survival, the message usually centres on blood-and-thunder football based on fierce physical commitment kept within a no-frills framework.

Hodgson's Fulham side have some of those qualities, but the key to their recent revival has been a passing game based on men like the gifted and influential Jimmy Bullard.

They will hope Portsmouth are turning an eye towards the FA Cup final - although it is an insult to Harry Redknapp to suggest he will send out a less than committed side.

Human nature, however, may intervene to open the door for a Fulham escape as Pompey's players sub-consciously eye their big day at Wembley.

Reading looked safe after a good march brought wins against Middlesbrough, Manchester City and Birmingham, but a sudden descent into freefall has left them in a desperate position.

A trip to Derby has been a guarantee of three points for most teams this season, but has the tide turned inexorably against Reading? What are the odds on Paul Jewell's doomed side rounding off the season with a rare win to sink the Royals?

Reading's cause has not been helped by a crass comment by manager Steve Coppell's number two Kevin Dillon, who suggested his side deserved to be relegated if they could not win at Pride Park.

Think it Kevin. But don't say it. Not now.

Jewell has rightly pounced on the remarks as a motivational tool and there is a sense he would like the opportunity to face Dillon again in the Championship next season.

So we come to Birmingham, who at least have home advantage but difficult opponents in Blackburn.

They are capable of getting a win, but how they may come to regret casting aside two points when they let a two-goal lead slip against Liverpool at home a fortnight ago.

One final issue to be settled is the Uefa Cup place, with Aston Villa needing to win at West Ham to deprive Everton if David Moyes' side lose at home to Newcastle.

Everton have been a permanent fixture in the top five in recent months - and I expect them to get the point they need to clinch a deserved place in Europe.

So there's my verdict. United to win the title, Reading and Birmingham to join Derby in the Championship and Everton to qualify for Europe.

Let us know your thoughts and predictions ahead of the big day.

Barrymanulow

"No prizes for guessing which category Keegan fits into"

Keegan has had an outstanding football career leading Liverpool to major domestic and European honours.

One of the first english players to be successful with a european club (Hamburg) and to win european player of the year in successive seasons - can you name another British player that has achieved this since ?

What a failure Keegan has been doh

United deserve to win the tie-breaker as they're ahead both head to head and on GD.

But to say the "best" team won the title when they're dead even on points on the last day sounds more like banter than a rational assessment.

5 seconds less Fergie time for United or one less dodgy pen for Chelsea and suddenly "the best" isn't top anymore.

It's the only bloody chance Fulham had! Over 38 games we deserve to go down though, the table doesn't lie.

Next EPL season MU players must improve their ball distributions and possesions and play "sexy" and exciting football like Arsenal players. MU players seem to behave like working class players compared to Arsenal, more of aristocratic in their style of play. MU players are rather slow in their movement, not like Arsenal and Chelsea players. Arsenal and Chelsea players got wonderful chracter. Very determined and aggresive players and very colourful!!
