Bracewell back for Gloucestershire

County cricket Gloucestershire
comment on the article

John Bracewell leaving New Zealand in April 2009 creates an opportunity for Glos. to secure someone with proven ability to lead the county , once again. Much as I like Jack Russell as a person, sportsman, wicket-keeper and artist, I feel the county needs leadership, coaching experience and contacts.
I fear for this season since the squad only seems to have a couple of wicket-taking bowlers of the required standard! It is going to be difficult to win 4-day games. So perhaps the expectations will have to rest on the limited-form of the game.(I choose my words carefully!!).
My advice is for the county to secure Bracewell and start planning for the future. More seating, yes. BUT, much more important, a competitive side!

Sorry, don't agree ... Yes he was successful as a county coach in the past, but since he took over in NZ he's alienated people, ruined careers, shot his mouth off all over the world and generally presided over a period of regression and failure ... The man is a liability and needs to get over himself before he will be any use to anyone ... If you're looking for leadership and good contacts, look elsewhere - he's not a leader he's a dictator, and his book of contacts will be pretty thin by the time he finishes pissing off everyone in the game.

I agree Waikato - if anyone wants Braces they're welcome to him. In fact, take him yesterday if you like!

It's just a shame he didn't go after the World Cup - a few of the kiwi ICL rebels might have stayed with the national side sadface

Interesting comments on Bracewell - perhaps from 2 kiwis who know more about him. Apart from the individual, any ideas regarding the present state of Glos. and the way forward?

PS Perhaps in the light of these remarks on Bracewell, Spearman and Marshall wouldn't be so keen!!! We can't lose them in view of the dire shortage of home-grown talent!

Clarence, really all I know about Gloucs cricket is Marshall and Spears sorry! ... Last season you seemed to have a competitive but not very inspiring team in the LVCC Div 2, saw them a couple of times at Lord's ... The two Kiwi boys have been pretty succesful indeed, and I know Hamish is happy there (assume Spears is as well) ... I think Gloucs would do well to look for a coach with local ties who knows the local game, rather than a grumpy old idiot like Braces! Sorry I can't be any more use ...

Although Bracewell brought Spearman to the club so I can't imagine him leaving because of his return (although he may retire before then anyway). Marshall is a more interesting case, it depends how much his departure was based on antipathy towards Bracewell.

Under Bracewell, we had one of the best spells in our history, all those One Day trophies and even at times played cricket and survived in, the top division.

Indeed, our One Day haul under him was one of the best spells of winning trophies in English County History.

As for this season, it started fine, we would have beaten Derbyshire if not for rain, could have beaten Glamorgan if not for rain, but made a major miscalcuation when declaring with no batting bonus pts in a recent game and possibly unfairly done by D/L When Glamorgan were 174/4 off 42 overs, we got set 74 in 10. However, when we made 350/5 in 50, only 240 in 30 was set.

In most walks of life, personal and professional, going back seldom works.
Then was then and now is now. Don't forget that Bracewell had Smith and Russell as well as those he recruited. I think that times have moved on and the Bracewell approach won't work these days.
