Keegan speaks the truth.

Premier League Newcastle United

I have got to admire Kevin Keegan as unlike most other managers he is his own man and tells it as he sees it.The problem is that all the world's best players want to go to either big cities in Spain , Italy , London,Liverpool or Manchester (Manchester because Utd can attract anyone) the rest of the northern based English or Scottish clubs don't stand a chance. We need to find home grown players like Alan Shearer who in my opinion was better than anyone playing in the Premiership today.I do think that you are in a decent position of having one of the country's best strikers in Michael Owen who you can build a decent team around.Good luck to Kevin and the Toon for next season.

'Chelsea would not have been regarded as being as big a club as Manchester City, Villa, Everton, Newcastle and Tottenham. Money and good management changed that.'

As a Chelsea supporter of nearly 50 years, I can agree whole heartedly with this. We have never been a 'big' side and I really think that the big five of old, ie Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool & Man United, are still traditionally the biggest clubs in english football.

It's all down to fan base and the history of trophies. Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham, Newcastle, Sunderland, even Leeds, have never been consistently on top to justify the tag of big club. Chelsea are getting there, give us another five years and we'll be there - if RA stays and I for one think he will. Of the others perhaps Tottenham could crack it, but Ramos has to stay a good few years.

Newcastle United? Love 'em! KK is pure genius, a good guy who deserves some success as a manager just on the basis of being a genuine individual, but would Fergie have won all he has by being a bit more Keeganesque... Don't think so peacedove

Keegan is dead right. You need big money to buy big players. Not english players. They're jsut not good enough.South Americans, Europeans and even Koreans. And a couple of english players just to make up the numbers and give the home fans something to cheer about.Otherwise even the home based sports writers and soccer pundits will have nothing to write about.

When and if Messi joins the premier league, you will see what I mean.

Cheers!

Where were Chelsea up 'til 2004/5? they had not won the top division since 1954/55! They were not a 'big' club until RA strolled in and his money attracted quality players. There is no reason Man City, Villa or Newcastle can't do the same if they spend big.

The only way I can see to prevent money buying any club a place in the top 4 is to have a wage cap and/or a quota for overseas players as Rugby League and Cricket do. Unfortunately, this would mean English clubs struggling to win the CL. Experience from RL and Cricket also shows that these measures still don't help the national team!

Sorry but KK is just plain wrong! MU had the problem of attracting players prior to the 90's. We had to break our wage structure in order to get players. We had to pay much more than London & them at the end of the M62 to get them to OT. Then SFA built up Utds youth ranks which had been destroyed by managers such as Big Ron, the youth brought success, that allowed us to get the players to build.
I'm told that KK destroyed NU's youth policy to concentrate on buying players, now he moans that he cant buy players there are no young players coming through. He still doesnt believe in youth. Hasnt L'il Dennis been given that job? Keegan is just looking for excuses once again. The man lacks commitment (or foresight) for a long haul job.

Sorrry but, Everton are too inconsistent, they finish good one season then fail the next.

yes they could be true but lets not leave out a chance of seeing teams like newcastle making it wit the the current player. it is only true that they were only sleeping but they can do better.then the other thing to remember is that today,s football has been corrupted wit plenty money so kk is right u need money to get the right material for the club, but one thing i will never agree is that it is wrong to say that england has no material to suit newcastle.

Toon fans and the word realistic don't really go together all that well.

i really hope keegan gets backed in this transfer window with a lot of cash, at least forty million.
I think people have unfair on Allardyce's buys considering he got a few decent players (as well as some dissapointments) but he only got 20 odd million to spend.
That (expletive) Souness got fifty one summer which he then splashed on high price rubbish like Luque and Boumsong.
Keegan can attract big names, I just hope he gets the money to do it.
