Interesting day for Rafa

Premier League Liverpool

Here is what Rafa had to say today over the loss of Harry Kewell and Alex Miller and the determination to keep Peter Crouch:

Rafael Benitez has slapped a £15million price tag on England's Peter Crouch and confirmed that Harry Kewell will leave Liverpool in the summer. And the Anfield chief also revealed that he had held talks with Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill over the potential transfer of midfielder Gareth Barry to Liverpool.

Benitez accepts that Crouch could have his head turned after a frustrating season when he has found first-team chances hard to come by - but the Spaniard insists he will not be leaving on the cheap.

"Crouch wants to play every week but knows he must fight it out with Fernando Torres," Benitez said.

"We keep seeing Portsmouth linked with the player but we have had no offer as yet.

"A £15m price tag would not be unreasonable."

On Kewell's departure, Benitez added: "We have tried to come to an agreement with the player and his agent, but that has not been possible.

"Kewell will leave the club at the end of his contract."

It is believed that Kewell has rejected a new deal on reduced wages.

Benitez also explained further the pending saga over Barry, and revealed that nothing more will happen until after this weekend's closing round of league matches.

He said: "I have spoken to Martin O'Neill, he knows my ideas.

"But we agreed to wait until the end of the season for any more discussions."

Benitez has also seen coach Alex Miller leave the club to take up a management appointment in Japan with JEF United Chiba.

He said: "We have some names to consider and will make an appointment soon."

So, who's glad the money sucking Kewell has gone, who's gutted we have lost Alex Miller (I am) and who is glad we are (hopefully) keeping Crouch?

Anelka is vastly overrated - only a fool like Grant would spend that much on him. He misses sooooo many chances - look at his goal record at Chelsea, what is it? 3?!!

Crouch is a much better player.

-----------------------

No there is loyalty and there is delusional, pig headed, blinkered naivety....Anelka is played as an Impact Sub currently and when he does come on Grant usually pushes him out wide.......He is an better down the middle, and will see more play tehre should Drogba leave in the summer......

Anelka v Crouch! ... Anelka has played for Arsenal, Real, PSG, Liverpool, Febernache, Bolton & Chelsea and proven himself....Crouch- Failed at Villa, had a good season at Southampton and can't figure in rafa's plans even wit all his rotation and now he's up for sale!.......Yeah righ Crouch is a better player
-----------------------------
why has anelka had so many clubs? cos every manager has realised he ain't all that and got rid of him (bolton wanted to keep him but, well, they're bolton). he's so one dimensional it's untrue, the ball needs to be thread through perfectly and he has to keep his dosey arse onside and then he might, MIGHT slide the ball through the keepers legs, but it's only 50-50. anelka is poo, deal with it.

Radical Joe's post has the pricing situation about right. Peter Crouch might not be worth 15 big ones but LFC will need to spend a lot more than that to replace his potential. A bird in the hand Raffa! It is clear that Benitez is being irrational in his choice of strikers, that he does not understand the English game very well. Torres and Crouch playing week in and out could have become the partnership that could dominate Premiership for seasons to come. Torres nor any other player will ever be capable of breaking down first class defences, I thought John Terry would have to be surgically removed after the 2nd leg against Chelsea and can anyone honestly doubt that Crouch AND Torres would not have been more effective in keeping him honest?

Portlandbill, i would have to disagree with you analysis of liverpools struggles. i would narrow it down to two things.

1. You had a great bit of momentum early in the season and then Rafa blew it by playing weak teams against birmingham and pompey and underplaying Torres, your main goal threat.

2. I would say your wingers are pants but its more what wingers. Kuyt, Babel, Voronin, Benayoun............ four names that strike fear into the hearts of fullbacks....... well maybe in the championship. Those four named above are quite simply not good enough to be starting wingers for a club with liverpool's aspirations. At least one QUALITY winger is needed. Someone earlier mentioned Quaresma, he would just about do for the Pool. You look at the options united, arsenal and chelsea have on the wings and they all have at least 1 or two classy wingers that genuine matchwinners whereas liverpool dont. Simple!

Carior - I dont understand where you are coming from, I have stated in all of my posts that we need a winger/forward to rotate with Babel & Kuyt but be able to partner/replace Torres up front aswell.

This is why we dont need Barry.

apart from losing some of the obvious, I would spend £20mill on a Henry style winger
That is all i have ever said on this post

THAT is my point. You dont need an "Henry style winger" because his isn't blinking winger, nor is Kuyt, these are palyers that are adept at crossing and bringing genuine width. My point is that you need a genuine winger, not a forward but a winger, a Joaquin/Quaresma/Vicente type who is going to provide genuine width and quality and is prepared to go outside the fullback and deliver quickly rather than delay the cross and cut in to shoot.

I dont know if this makes more sense? but i find whenever i watch liverpool in the final third i never see players whipping the ball in after having beaten the fullback on the outside. You just have to look at the trouble a ball from behind the full back causes. Ask JA Riise. But its not something i have seen liverpool do that much and a "forward" like kuyt and babel/ henry style player doesnt do that, they cut in and try to shoot too much when they could drive wide and cross and i think this is somewhere liverpool could improve a lot just by getting width in the final third!

Kuyt plays on the wing for Holland, in the same position as in Liverpool

Henry was a winger at Arsenal, as well as a Forward

Henry plays a winger role for Barca

Kewel was both a winger & forward for Leeds

Ronaldo an Nani are good examples of what we need.

but any of the players you have mentioned below will do nicely.

and Barry does not fit that role at all

Oh barry isnt an option, you definitely do not need Barry.

I would ay using the Henry as a winger at Barca doesnt necessarily help your point in that he has been so wonderfully effective at Barca that they want rid.

But yea. i spose i would say you need a diddy bit more natural width than Kuyt (he is a converted forward afterall)

Anyways luck to the Pool, hope you finish 2nd (afterall cant have you beating the boys in red and white to first :P, next year is the chance to equal the record provided a job is done tomorrow!)

What game is Rafa playing.Crouch was not even a sub against Man City. Now he slaps 15 mil. on him. I agree with the person who said that Torres and Crouch should play together. He holds the ball up so well. Why not send Rafa out on a free transfer. Then Stevie's dream of winning the league may be closer

Agreed on the wingers - we badly need creativity/flair in the final third and barring Torres and Babel we have none. Kuyt works his socks off but isn't a winger - whether Holland play him there or not - he's got about as much skill and technique as my aunt vera, i'd go as far as saying we need 2 high quality wingers - Babel can continue developing as an impact sub on the wing or up front, Benayoun a good squad player, Pennant - just doesn't quite cut it at the highest level. We should keep Crouch though and play him far more - in the Chelsea 2nd leg he was gonna bring him on until one piece of skill by Benayoun - thought that was a mistake we needed him badly as Torres was isolated and easily dealt with and we had no movement or cutting edge in the final 3rd.

Crouchy's coming to Pompey for around £8 million, and we'll have your Aunt Vera too if she's available on the cheap.
