'83 Team

Scottish Premier Aberdeen
comment on the article

Just reading the article on the Gothenburg triumph and the thing that stood out to me was that on a night when it rained constantly reducing the pitch to an unplayable bog almost, we only used 1 sub (puns at the ready!) and he came on in the 87th minute. Considering we were in with a shout of the league and had a Cup final coming up that's remarkable.

I think that one of the main things that has changed over the years is the use of subs. It's impossible to imagine such a scenario occurring now. I remember in those days you used to regulalrly see the same 11 starting and finishing the match. Kind of shows how much the game has developed athletically.

Also an obvious thing to bring up considering Rangers predicament just now. Our squad was tiny in comparison and we were fighting on 3 fronts.

That's why many of that team retired early. Burnt out!

Retired early? Dont think so, wgs went on for donkeys as did a couple of others.
Its more down to the volume of games and training they do now. Makes it a bit more intense. Also the build of those athletes is so different now, in the 80's there was more physical aspect than now.

Back at Christmas I was reading the Observer and it compared players stats now with three years ago. In terms of the distance covered the average was pretty much unchanged, generally players cover 8 - 8.5 km a match. The big difference though was the % of that distance covered at speed. There was something like a 20% increase. I would imagine this is even more marked than compared to 25 years ago.

Am I alone in thinking even in the late 80s if the team had performed they generally all got 90 minutes in a league match?

I was a bit surprised by the crowd. Only 18000 there, 12k of them dandies.

Eric Black was my boyhood hero and he definately had his career cut short by back injury. I'll never forget his 50-minute hat-trick at Parkhead on my first visit to Celtic Park. What a night that was, surrounded by Celtic fans!

Stand Free, the reason the crowd was so low was because the rain kept the neutrals away. This coupled with the fact there were only about 40 Real fans(no joke)meant we had nearer 15,000 fans. The locals that did go sided with the Dons.

Also the only reason we made the sub was due to an ankle injury to Black!

Many Real fans never bothered making the trip cause they thought they were guaranteed the cup.

Was still in primary school when we won the CWC and can remember the next day a huge mob of us standing on a grassy mound singing our hearts out.
Then later my teacher came over and said my mother had phoned to say she was taking me out of school for the rest of the day so that I could go to Pittodrie to greet the team. What an atmosphere, still gives me goose bumps thinking about it. Anyone remember the guys planting the flag in the centre circle and then kneeling down to worship?!!

Only problem was those dodgy tracksuits they were wearing, shockers!

As for the game, when the whistle went I just sat in my chair and said to myself 'Remember this moment and saviour it" Strange thought for an 11 year old I know but not one I regret!

Here We Go!
