Cardiff-Based Pentwyn Dynamo's secured the MacWhirter Welsh League Division Three title after taking maximum points from their last 11 matches.
After devastating back to back defeats against Merthyr Saints and Penrhiwceiber Rangers in January, manager Lee Stephens must have wondered whether it was going to be their year, after falling at the last hurdle in the 2006-07 season.
But few people could have forecast the run of victories ahead after those January setbacks.
The following 'must win' game was away to struggling Abertillery. The Dynamo's cruised to a 3-0 win but Tyrone Toppar, newly signed from Clevedon Town, saw his season come to an abrupt end when an ill-fated challenge broke and dislocated his ankle.
In the next game (away to Goytre), Pentwyn then hit back from 2-1 down to beat Goytre 4-2 with captain Lee Grant an inspirational figure in the centre of midfield, commanding the game at both ends of the pitch.
Form struck at the right time for Pentwyn as they began their run of wins. A 9-0 demolition of Ystradgynlais was followed by an extremely tight 1-0 Away win against Monmouth and a comfortable 5-1 home win against Llansawel.
Pentwyn travelled to 2nd placed Newcastle Emlyn with only 2 points separating them at the top. With both sides promotion favourites, the crunch match was described as 'the game that could decide the league' but Manager Lee Stephens refused to speculate. Pentwyn went on to win a closely fought match 1-0 taking the lead in the table to 5 points. Newcastle Emlyn went on to take just 2 points from their next 3 games.
Although Pentwyn conceded 3 goals against Cwmamman United, the Dynamo strike force continued their impressive run of form ensuring they won 4-3. Pentwyn had won seven games in a row, but the management team demanded they tighten up in defence.
Shot Stopper Andrew Sheen and defenders Mark Johnson, Daniel Winston, Russell Flowers & Paul Light immediately closed the door on their opponents, winninng the next four games 1-0, 5-0, 3-0 and 2-0 against Porthcawl, Llansawel, Merthyr Saints and Seven Sisters respectively taking their impressive run of straight wins to 11 games.
The win against Merthyr Saints saw the Dynamo's secure the title. After a closely fought scoreless first half, Pentwyn upped their performance in the second half to win 3-0, keeping their third clean sheet in a row.
After celebrating the success of securing the league title, a (heavy) Saturday evening was followed by a Sunday fixture away to Seven Sisters. On form strikers, David Williams and Barry Gunstone were ruled out at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances meaning Pentwyn had to rely on the abilities of Reserve Goalkeeper Jamie Sheen, 27 and Kit man Mike Preece, 57 to play up front.
Thankfully, goals game from midfielders Lee Grant and Ryan Cachia, to seal a 2-0 win and record their 4th clean sheet and 11th Straight win.
