THE END OF AN ERA

European Football Barcelona
comment on the article

Disappointed with the season of Barca i want to think that it is the end of a lucky period for barca and despite the sad end of the story today we must pay tribute to this team for gratifying fans with the kind of football we really love to watch

Sure most players will leave and the coach is already leaving but the catalan spirit will remain and we will support them next season for the catalans will one day rule Europe again

"Do you honestly think Ranieir bought those players?
Come on they were purchaed knowing Ranieri was out.
It nopt the purchase of players that is the skill it is getting them playing together ina systgem that works."

What are you on about?
Lampard, Joe Cole, Robben, Makelele, Gallas, Duff, Gudjohnsen...
Ranieri built that team.

Ranieri took over a team finishing 6th and with 7 players over 30.
He totally rebuilt the team (including making an 18 year old Terry captain) and the season before Mourinho arrived Chelsea came second in the league with their best finish in 50 years. They could have won it if Arsenal hadn't gone a whole season unbeaten.
They also reached the semi-final of the champions league that year.

So Mourinho takes over this team, gets handed 100s of millions, and gets all the credit for their success?!

But when he can't keep it up (largely because he sold a number of Ranieri's players) it's not his fault.
Why is it not his fault?

Grant takes over the same team and gets them playing even better. But that's not down to him- it's Mourinho's team.

Are they playing better?

6 trophies in 3 years and missed out on champions league final last two years by penalty shootout and a controversial goal.

Jopse had a slow start to the season but so did Fergie at Man Utd.

At the end of the day the facts are currently Chelsea have yet to win anything this season after an average of 2 pieces of silverware every year.

Eh if you havent noticed 4 of those palyers are no lnoger their and Chelsea still do well in the league. i don't think the change of managers has enhanced or worsened Chelsea's chances of winning the Pl or CL i think the sudden amount of money heaped on them by Abramovich is the main reason for tyheir success. The main part the Chelsea team cost ALOT of money - as did fringe players like Shevchenko ( £30million,) SWP (£24 million)

Then you have Drogba and Essien who both cost about £25 million but have obviously been great signings. Money is the reason that Chelsea are the team they are today, otherwise they would be a mid-table side.

"Are they playing better?

With Ranieri's team.

"and missed out on champions league final last two years by penalty shootout and a controversial goal."
But got to the final this year, largely because Liverpool struggled to deal with the more attacking style compared to the previous two years (I'm a Liverpool fan fwiw)

"At the end of the day the facts are currently Chelsea have yet to win anything this season after an average of 2 pieces of silverware every year."
But when Grant took over (which didn't really happen until after the first Man Utd game) they were 7 points behind. So
the "facts" seem to suggest he could have won the league if he'd started off level.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not claiming Mourinho was a bad manager. But his achievements at Chelsea were on the back of Ranieri's work and helped along by a lot of money. Similarly, winning the Portugese league with Porto is comparable to winning the SPL with Celtic/Rangers.
The only achievements that suggest Mourinho could be a great manager are the European ones with Porto.

Well if YOU notice, those (Ranieri) players WERE there when Chelsea were actually WINNING the league. It was when they were replaced by the (ridiculously expensive) Mourinho signings that you're so happy with, that Chelsea stopped winning things.

Chelsea fan here, how on earth are people still blaming grant? Ok ... look at this:

1)As prevouisly stated, Mourinho's CORE team was built by Ranieri (eg. Lampard, J.Cole, Gallas, Duff).
2)Mourinho won the CL with Porto ... boo hoo ... So wat ? were talking about HIS ACHIEVMENTS in CHELSEA!
3)6 trophies in 3 years? would you mine telling me how much he spent for winning 2 CARLING CUPS! and still not getting us into the final (i don't care if we lost by penalties or whatever ... we still didnt make it to the final) ... and when GRANT ... his FIRST SEASON without his team, managed to get them to the CL Final!!
4)Mourinho's football were boring-FACT, GRANTS football was boring-FACT, but whos team is it?
5) ...How many points did chelsea finish last year off man u with mourinho's team under mourinho ? they lost the title at like league game 34/35(dont know when) ... however ... mourinho's team that is managed by grant were 7 pts behind manu ... and they took it to the final day of the PL...

"Cech too"

True.
But I was responding to the allegation that all of these players were bought with Ranieri's departure in mind.

This might be true of Cech...

Bojan and Messi are basically the future of Barça, i think that Bojan could become as good as Messi in the future. Barça desperately need a better goalie and defense, i mean it sounds good when you say: Puyol, Abidal, Zambrotta and Thuram/Milito, they all used to be great players, but i think they need to sign Dani Alves to replace Zambrotta and Casillas to replace Valdés (not that that is ever gonna happen)
Real Madrid have a great team at the moment and Barça just need some players life that, they need to get David Silva as well to be a Left Winger. Their midfield is good, i think they probably need just 1 or 2 more players there, maybe sign Van der Vaart, Diego or Nasri. They've already got Iniesta and Xavi.

I think that Barça should give Deco, Henry, Eto'o and Ronaldinho just a bit more time, they're all such good players to let go of prematurely.
Barça line up, which is possible for next season, if they did sell Deco Henry Ronaldinho and Eto'o:

Valdés (unfortunately)
Abidal
Puyol
Mertesacker (from W. Bremen)
Dani Alves (From sevilla)
Xavi
Iniesta
David Silva
Diego
Bojan
Messi
