FA sets England semi-final target

International England
comment on the article
Fabio Capello

The Football Association has set England coach Fabio Capello the target of reaching at least the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup or Euro 2012.

England have not reached the last four of a major tournament since 1996.

Full story

Terry Venables' side made the semi-finals of Euro 96, but lost to Germany on penalties.

Capello has only been at the helm for two England matches but the FA's "Major Milestones" report makes it clear what is now expected of him.

So do you see these as realistic ambitions?

unfortunately forza its in our culture. we think that by setting a target, we will somehow perfom better and reach it. like blaming foreign players, its really juist a way to deflect peoples attention away from the fact that the FA are imcompetent, most of our footballers lack basic technical skill at the highest level, and our grassroots system is a shambles....

do us a favor mr negative, change your nationality..ok

its a FACT..our own english league is diluted by foreign players ,we have the most liberal footbal league systems in the world

Isn't it a bit arrogant and naive to say World Cup sem finals when we didn't even qualify for EU 2008, nor have we even qualified for the world cup yet. One step at a time...

im being obecjtive, therefore i cant be english? you're an idiot.
its not they just come over randomly, we sign them, they dont just turn up and play for a club. and yes we are technically inferior, it really pains me to say it, but we're not as good as we used to be. i dont disput the fact that foreign players are in the majority, but you have to ask why. to fill the viod our players leave. we are fantsatic in defence, and in work rate, and we're pretty good up upfront, but when it comes to the technical stuff, and flair. dribbling past players,we are poor, that's why we sign foreign players. and the fact we massively overvalue our players. ferdinand and vidic are the two best defenders in the league. one cost 29m, one cost 7m. ones english, ones serbian, guess whos 29m

I dont get this, we have probably the most competetive and publicised league, most of the best players in our league, and we are so bloody crap I do not get this. SURE the big teams dont buy english players but we still have heaps of good players anyway.
Its time for a wakeup call for our football team, England FC, some of the best players in the world, but still crap.
England Rugby, we are the underdog, and still get to the final. Time to start taking away these rich peoples wages and make them play for their money. i mean, for gods sake, we have players like gerrad, lampard, terry, ferdinand, cole, cole, robinson, hargreaves (who in my opinion is good), rooney, and owen. and countless others. How can we not get to the semis with a team like that? We need an inspirational leader like Martin Johnson was to england rugby. the only performing people we have is lennon, in 1 game, and hargeaves, 1 of the few people to score a bloody penalty.
I mean
COME ON!!!

I doubt very much if those who are making the most negative comments are happy about it. The fact is the English football team has not performed for a long time.
I have said this before: WC 2006 we could have won, because it was not a vintage year but the players were lacklustre and lacking in the will to win. They went to Germany unbeaten but looked a poor side at times; two years on and we are not even in Euro 2008, that's a national disgrace. The game that is supposed to be our national sport and we cannot even qualify for a tournament in Europe -not Africa where the weather will see us off. The FA are hopeless and Capello is not the right man but because of the quick departure of McClaren the FA acted in haste and got Capello too quickly. They should have looked harder around the world stage to find a better choice and at least one whose English is fluent. I would not fancy having to have an argument with one of the English prima donnas in broken Italian.

Time will tell: first we must qualify, preferably topping our group.

its a known fact that he has got decent english, but he prefers not to talk to the media. i do understand what you're saying but who else would have come in?

I personally would have gone for O Neill, as Mourinho didn't want it.
Capello is top coach tho.

As for the climate. In Germany 06 it was 34 degrees plus during some of our matches. In S Africa it will be much cooler, it's their winter..

as i said before, i will say again..
our team needs to love the country, look at our rugby team, underdogs, but got to the final. They were desperate to win.
Second priority is to get a good captain.
I think we have some good youths in lennon and Walcott, i would like to see how walcott plays pro.

Here's a line or two about playing - and serving(as it should be) - your country from Australia's chairman to the Joey's (Under 17's) at the Socceroos v Ghana game today:
“There is no greater honour than representing your country.

“Australia provides you with education, both academic and sporting, and I think it’s only fair that young people with sporting ability should choose with pride to play for Australia"

and:

“Our bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup is not a dry run,
we want to host, play in and win the World Cup in 2018.”

WAKE UP FA - GET THE GRASSROOTS HAPPENING - INSPIRE THE NEW GENERATION -
FABIO ......KICK OUT THE PLAYERS WITH BAD ATTITUDES AND LETHARGIC COMMITMENT
ENGLAND'S TAGET SHOULD BE TO WIN, WIN, WIN
