"Surely beating them in a world cup final & then topping the qualifying group convincingly with France in it, not to mention out status in the FIFA world rankings, means we are a far superior team to the french."

Exactly. We've never been given the credit we deserve for 2006. Amount of people saying we were lucky is amazing, they must've been watching a different game to me. Lucky? We hit the bar, had a goal disallowed, had more of the possession (51:49 IIRC) and their goal was a very dubious penalty. And could you really see Italy losing to Scotland home and away like the French did in the qualifiers? Not likely. Italy don't have Cannavaro but we still have Buffon, Pirlo, Gattuso, Toni and Zambrotta - all exceptional players.

Di Panna *Rushdie was right

My friend i could not have said it better myself!!

I have just been chatting to some Germans and although some acknowledged our WC victory over them, one guy still said we were lucky cos we should not have beaten the Aussies (Grosso penalty incident)

I am amazed at the sour grapes from some people!!

This tournament could not get any better if ..

We knock out the French cos i hate them (particularly domenech for his comments over the last 2 years about the Azzurri.

And we beat germany in the final to prove the victory over them in2006 in their own backyard was no fluke.. For gods sake it should have finished 4-0 we hit the woodwork twice in et..

dominiquedropsy,

I too was frustrated by the World Cup final and Zidane but I'm over it now.

We are being written off now but if it were not two bizarre games against Scotland we would've comfortably won the qualifying group. We scored the most goals and conceded the least, and we have not been beaten by Italy in the space of 90 mins in thirty years (or more?).

Zidane has departed, long live Ribery and Benzema. Allez France!

The BBC will probably delete your post because it's in foreign language and we all know what they think of the French! erm

The italians are world champions. They proved they were yesterday evening, no doubt about it. The way they played was so fantastic. Companies of game softwares should take italian in their models. They were so brilliant. I love their pastas in fact. Only the german and the french won the world cup and the Euro in a row!!!! No doubt as for them, they were real champions !
