When u see results like 2-0 Wigan at villa park u worry about the "European Ambitions" Of Villa
What needs to change?

A new versatile defender
New midfeilder ( If Barry leaves)
A true goal machine
Plus If Carson doesn't stay a Keeper ( maybe Paul Robinson dare I say it)

What you really thought you were gonna get 5th, what a joke this club are. Know your place

-------------------------
You're right...The fact Villa have one of the most talented managers in the league, with the smallest squad, with a superb chairman, with a host of young english talent does indeed make us a joke club.

Also, we know Villa are placed 13 points above Spurs mate.

Seriously? I was at the game and the atmosphere was great, especially for Mellberg. It really annoys me that you say you are a Villa fan but listen to the game on the radio, then have a go at the people at the game. We were excellnt at the start but when you can't muster a chance, we gave up.

Well considering I made a 400 mile round trip (when I'm not at uni I live in Essex) in the pouring rain a few weeks ago to see the 4-0 drubbing at Man U, I think it's a bit presumptuous of you to suggest I'm just an armchair fan.

The commentators both remarked at how quiet it was and it did not sound at all like considerable noise was being made. Understandable in some ways to give up cheering when the team were being so inept but, even so, a bit of extra oomph from the fans might have given the players a kick up the proverbial. Glad Mellberg got a good reception though.

Gutted. This is our worst defeat of the season.

Awfully disserpointed.

Wigan fan in peace. Unfortunately when you dominate games, something can go against you and that's what happened today.

I'm glad we're safe but Villa were unlucky. Still, games against teams battling to stay up are never easy.

its never gonna happen. i promise you. villa we'll never get close to the top four. chelsea, liverpool, man utd and arsenal will always be the strongest four in england.

We were poor today. The match reviewer for the BBC is very, very kind to us saying we made "lots of chances". We had half chances at best and we were slow out of the traps and playing catch up all game.

We struggled to beat teams that came to defend at our place in the first half of the season and we've found the same in the second half of the season (Wigan, Sunderland, Boro).

We should have signed some proper first team talent in January and given ourselves more options.

Still, all in all, it has been a good season of solid progress. We need a big Summer, though, if we are to improve again next season.

And can I just say how disappointed I was with Barry today? I really think he's had his head turned, he telephoned that performance in. He gave away possession cheaply and only jogged about to get the ball back. Very poor show.

United will show they are the best by doing what none of the other big 4 teams did...do a double over Wigan! laugh But seriously, have Wigan been one of the most important teams this season? Not only have they been fighting at the bottom but they have affected things significantly at the top.

This result shows that Villa still have some way to go. The results at home to Sunderland, Boro and Wigan have cost us dearly and I fully expect Everton to take 5th now. Blackburn may pip us for the intertoto as they seem to be on form and Pompey are still pushing although whenever i see them they seem to lose so god knows how they're still in contention!

All in all it's been a good season for Villa - we're not far away from being a very good team but i think we have to concede that Gareth Barry will be a Liverpool player next year. Still, let's see how we can turn that to our advantage. He has two years left on his contract so we can ask for a hefty price and possibly a player in exchange as well. With the money and a player on board we could go out and get Steve Sidwell off Chelsea for £5m. Quality player IMO - look how Reading have collapsed without him.

THIS WAS A FREAK PERFORMANCE - I went to the Wigan game yesterday. It was the worst Villa performance I have seen in years! Inept and Impotent. The game started at a snail's pace and Villa never got out of first! Carson was woeful as was Agbonlahor and Barry didn't seem to know how to get everyone up! Mellberg was superb and I think this being his last game for Villa and all the transfer talk during the week totally unsettled the team. To be fair Wigan were woeful too, there two goals were surprising and should have been dealt with by Carson, Kirkland did very well for Wigan but didn't have that much too deal with, the rest of Wigan were very poor and didn't play like a team pushing for safety and Villa didn't play like a team pushing for Europe - definitely a game for neutral or fan - very poor all round and played with a degree of lethargy by both teams, neither seemed interested and the pace of the game not got faster than a trot! Bizarre and a freak performance by both sides - there was NONE of the spirit, soul, pace and inventiveness of the Everton game and their performance was unrecognisable from the side that has entertained us all all season, I don't hold out much hope at West Ham and just hope we qualify for the Intertoto now!

Sorry but it wasn't a freak performance. It wasn't our average performance, no, and it certainly wasn't our best ... but we have played like that at other times in the season.

At home against Fulham in the beginning of the season, the first half at home to Newcastle, home games against Man City, Sunderland, Boro and Blackburn have all been very similar.

When teams come to defend and nick a goal at Villa Park we don't have much of a clue how to go about beating them. We resort to long ball football which is meat and drink to the monster centre backs that most Premier clubs have these days.

We need more options in games like these, players who can grab hold of the game and control it.
