Uefa Cup semi-final

Uefa Cup Rangers

comment on the article

Here we go. Rangers are within touching distance of their first European final for 36 years.

Walter Smith has guided the Ibrox club to the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup on the back of some dogged defensive displays at Ibrox and a number of superb performances on the road.

After comfortably holding Fiorentina to a goalless draw in their semi-final first leg, Rangers are seeking a crucial away goal in Florence as their supporters dream of going all the way to the final in Manchester.

BBC Sport website, BBC Radio Scotland & BBC Radio 5 Live have live coverage of the game. We also want your comments as the action unfolds in the Stadio Artemio Franchi from 1945 BST. Follow the action here news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

"Medieval-Evil-As an Arsenal supporter you should appreciate defensive style football.Don't forget it was Arsenal who became known as "Boring, boring Arsenal" and "One nil to the Arsenal"."

Of course, those are part of my heritage, but were in fact before my time. biggrin

Medieval-Evil-My point is that Rangers played that way 'cos their depleted team required them to do so.Generally speaking they are a team who attack. We all prefer a balance between attack and defence.Personally I think the present Arsenal team would be winning more with a solid back line of defenders rather than all the emphasis on attacking midfielders doubling as defenders. It will not suprise me at all to see Rangers really going at Zenit if their injury problems clear up.

Dreadful game played by two dreadful teams. It's an argument for scrapping the UEFA Cup. I can't see the point in having an advertisement for skilless mediocrity. Walter Smith may deserve some plaudits for acknowledging his team's 'deficiences' but he'd deserve more if he tried to do something about them.
I have to agree with the comments about Fiorentina's manager. Rangers may have been boring, negative and witless but Fiorentina weren't much better. It's the same refrain as Frank Rijkaard, when he complained about Man Utd's tactics. Really, if Barcelona were so superior they ought to have won and won easily. I can't imagine the 1960's Real Madrid team going out to the sort of dross that was on display yesterday and they sure as hell wouldn't have complained about it if they had.
There is something to be said for an under-resourced team getting to a final by guts, determination and passion but who alive wouldn't rather see them wiped out by a great footballing team? Zenit St Petersburg? I don't think so.

Rangers are Scottish, Celtic are Scottish this is the way it is, they play in the SCOTTISH premier league in SCOTLAND with other SCOTTISH teams, please could all English media and whatever stop jumping on the band wagon when a SCOTTISH team plays well! You don't see The Scotsman publishing stories on a British triumph as Man Utd. and Chelsea reach the champions league final! Show some more respect

As a Zenit St Petersburg fan (I used to live in that wonderful city) I think you all might have to have more respect for a side that has won its last few EUFA ties with style biggrin Knocking out Marseille, then demolishing Bayer Leverkusen away 4-1 and then holding Bayern in Munich, following that with a whopping 4-0 in the Petrovskiy stadium, they have got to the final with good tactics and attacking football; do not under-estimate the blue and whites from St Pete.
Dick Advocaat has got a good team there, several of whom feature in the Russian side that beat England to the European finals this year.
Beware the Russian bear; he can eat the Scotties for breakfast! devil

Fiorentina have already won 2 penalty shoot-outs in this UEFA Cup (against Groningen and Everton). no team can win 3 shoot-outs in one season!

There seems to be an awful lot of folk on here whose sides play wonderful attacking football in every game and consider Rangers performance last night as an affront to their sensibilities.

Well, I'm very sorry that my side spoiled your evening's TV viewing last night but it's not Walter Smith's or the Rangers players' job to entertain Joe Punter - their job is to win matches and bring success to the club.

May I remind you that football is, first and foremost, a sport and the primary aim in any sport is to win. How are you best served in achieving this aim - by playing to your strengths!

I would obviously prefer to see Rangers winning games by attacking and sticking the ball in the net with increasing regularity but I'm more than happy with what's on offer for now.

Smith took over this side approx 16 months months ago after Paul Le Idiot had brought us to our knees. I think Walter has done a remarkable job in an incredibly short space of time and will change the style of the side by bringing in players with skill and flair. This will take time though - what's the old saying? Oh yeah, 'Rome wasn't built in a day'.

BTW, I love all the smug Man Utd, Chelski, etc fans on here who revel in their superiority complex...

I can remember the days when Man Utd couldn't get a sniff of a league title and came within an FA Cup final loss of sacking the man (a Scotsman lest we forget) who has become their greatest ever manager (taking the mantle from another Scotsman).

At least Man Utd are a genuine world class-club though - as for Chelsea, when Abramovich gets bored and the superstars leave cos you can't afford to pay them you'll go back to the standard of the perennial middle-of-the-table side that you always were.

I've went on long enough but I'll make one last point. Both Rangers AND Celtic (I'm not one of the - fast decreasing I may add- bigoted morons) would flourish if they were playing in the Premiership with the revenues it brings in and the benefits it gives in attracting players. Both would be Top 6 regulars within 3 seasons and league title challengers within 5/6.

Wow, you do have some funny ideas. What's wrong with us celebrating the success of a Scottish side? Do you really think people in England are looking to steal the glory from Scotland, with Rangers in the UEFA cup final? If that's our aim, why bother, given the way English sides dominated the Champions league this year.

For an Italian to complain about anti-football is really sweet considering that Italian teams generally have developed the art of the nasty ugly close down of a one-nil lead for as long as I can remember.

Slight stereotype I think, maybe you should get off your Xbox, and actually watch some football

Nice one BB9989! Ironic your gybe about stereotypes - I don't own one computer game let along an Xbox whetever that is. Season ticket holder until I moved to Scotland - so stick that in your pipe and smoke it!
