Should Portadown be in the new league?

Irish Portadown
comment on the article

As things stand, the new 12-team Premier League in Northern Ireland will kick-off in August without one of the region's top clubs.

Welcome to the new dawn and a smaller, but supposedly better, top flight of Irish League football.

The decision to reduce the number of clubs in the top division from 16 meant there were bound to be casualties.

But nobody expected Ronnie McFall's Portadown to be one of them.

Places in the new league were to be given to clubs with the best ratings for results, attendances, facilities and provision for ladies and youth football.

But none of these proved the Ports' downfall. No, amazingly, they did not get their application in on time!

Their documents arrived at Irish FA headquarters 15 minutes after the stipulated deadline.

The "rules are rules" brigade will say Portadown missed the boat and it is their fault and no-one else's.

Portadown, though, believe common sense dictates that they should be given a bit of leeway here - afterall, we are talking 15 minutes.

So who is right? Will a Premier League be poorer without Portadown, four times winners since 1990?

Will it be less competitive and hit potential attendances?

Are fans and sponsors not entitled to see the best clubs in the new professionally-run league?

Or would a professionally-run club club not have made absolutely 100% certain that their paperwork was in on time?

it is going to be touch and go if the appeal is accepted or not

at the minute I am facing the worst though. We are really going to struggle to get this decison overturned.

Our club will fight on no matter what happens though, and they have my full support. I know they will do what is best for Portadown FC

This could end up in the courtroom if the appeal fails. although we would need a very strong case to go this far

Sadly (genuinely)common sense not to mention logic will require exclusion. Unfortuneately we will all miss Portadown for at least a year.
I wonder what advice and rule was on the application form?

I think Portadown Officials have made themselves to look like plonkers. I feel sorry for the management and players, to have their club run by these people. I hope the IFA stand firm on their original decision.

it's kinda Portadown's own fault for not havin the application in on time. if everyone else managed to get theirs in days before the deadline then why didn't Portadown make the effort to do the same thing? Although 14 minutes is abit extreme for kickin out one of the biggest clubs in NI, they still should'nt be allowed back into the premier league. They'll be missed alot but the IFA need to draw a line somewhere...if they let Portadown back in then they'll have to let in other clubs who had their applications turned down for similar reasons. In reality the IFA have made an absolute joke out the new league before it's even begun!

I think fairness has to dictate that Portadown will not be allowed into the league this year after the decision not to grant Limavady a domestic licence was upheld due to the late submission of their application. They too have extenuating circumstances. For me it is not just about the quality of the teams in the league this year or next, after all good clubs have been relegated in the past, it's about the integrity and quality of the administration of the league which is of paramount importance!

They should be out end of story or the new league will be a farce before it starts.

if portadown are allowed in, in my opinion it will destroy, with a single stroke, the integrity of this new invitational league.

The league is a farce anyway with or without Portadown!

Why games are not played on a Friday night to maximise crowd attendance is beyond me. How many potential supporters are there out there playing reserve and lower league fixtures on a Saturday afternoon when they could be filling the terraces and stands and helping to cement the coffers of their local clubs. Those with adequate floodlighting should be made to play on a Friday night!!!!!

And why are all cup finals played at the home ground of the one club that is almost surefire to be in it! Surely if Linfield are not in a final the game in the interests of neutrality should go to somewhere like Mourneview Park!

Also the number of Mickey Mouse competitions is unbelievable expecially when so many players are part-time! The League, cup and one other tournament should be enough. Quality as opposed to quantity!

Rant over!

I think the league will be worse off without the Ports, but rules are rules.

I hope they manage to keep the club running and return to the top flight soon.

In the mean time Cliftonville will take a few players off your hands for next season.
