Man Utd mature in search of Euro glory

European Football Manchester United
comment on the article

Sir Alex Ferguson's greatest triumphs have been built on a desire to play with a style and verve he believes is demanded at Manchester United.

Ferguson insists United must never be seen to take a backward step - with any other course of action being regarded as a betrayal of Old Trafford traditions.

It has proved irresistible at home as Ferguson has cleaned up on the domestic scene, but an Achilles heel in Europe as United's high-risk approach failed too often at the crucial times in the Champions League.

Ferguson admits one Champions League win in his silver-lined Old Trafford era is a meagre return for the talent he has had at his disposal.

But they delivered an all-round display against Barcelona that confirmed their growing maturity on the European stage this season.

Robbed of key duo Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic, United simply found new heroes to lead them to glory against a Barcelona side who threatened right up until the last of six nail-biting minutes of injury.

The win was the result of a magnificent display of defensive discipline and resilience that came from the very top drawer.

Paul Scholes - the great United servant who missed the 1999 triumph through suspension - will deservedly claim the glory for a spectacular winning goal that gives him a shot at redemption in Moscow.

Heroes were everywhere as United held firm faced by a team with greater artistic merit, but not the hunger or desire to pierce the red wall of defiance.

And none were bigger than Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown, who put everything on the line in the sort of "they shall not pass" defensive display that United have failed to produce in previous losing semi-finals.

Ferdinand was peerless, right down to soaring headed clearance in the dying seconds. It was symbolic of a magnificent personal performance.

And Brown, much-maligned and in some instances deservedly so, was simply immense as he joined Ferdinand to form an inpenetrable barrier.

They had an unlikely ally in striker Carlos Tevez, who gave the perfect example in defending from the front to set the tone for United's performance.

And with Scholes providing the decisive moment of magic that separated the sides, it is United who head to Moscow for the first all-English final against Chelsea or Liverpool on 21 May.

They will be propelled by a sense of destiny 50 years on from the Munich air disaster, and with a more rounded team than they have had at their disposal in recent times.

United possess the flair of Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez, but now they have a streak of steel that has made the difference between this campaign and others.

And then they have their manager.

Ferguson's raging fire remains undimmed. He possesses a unique hunger for the game that almost comes from a forgotten era. He has a passionate, combustible personality that divides opinions, but what is indisputable he is one of the all-time great managers.

He has fashioned a new United that looks well-equipped to bring the famous trophy back to Old Trafford for a third time - although Chelsea and Liverpool will have other ideas.

For now, however, Ferguson is entitled to celebrate a momentous night and a famous victory by joining the celebrations with an expensive bottle of his beloved red wine.

Actually, RyanRoon, I support my home-town club, Sliema Wanderers, and I will side with them with deep pride if they one day come across Arsenal. I am a very passionate fan, I even almost almost got beaten up once because I went to the the capital city (Valletta( wearing the Sliema kit, since Valletta are our rivals.

And I am also very proud of it for your information. They are the most glorious team in Malta, 26 league title, nine more than Man Utd, and have produced the very best Maltese talents, Michael Mifsud, and Tony Nicholl, who despite never playing abroad is touted to have benn even better than Mifsud.

And I only support Arsenal because every person in Malta supports a foreign team, but my love arsenal is nowhere near the love I have for my home-town club, who I play for at U-16 level.

Watch what you say before you speak .Mr.Ryan Roon, and I bet you're not even Manchester born, so why the hell argue?

Fair play, you do have at least one saving grace then!
I would suggest that you should be proud of supporting your team Sliema, they sound like something to be proud of in your country/league.

As such, I would suggest that you would be better off sticking to putting your obvious passion and support into them, not splitting it between them and a team you've never seen the ground of, and have never seen any of the players play in front of your eyes - live, at the ground, not on TV.

As a passionate Sliema supporter, does it not cause you some issue to have another team? Does supporting Arsenal not detract from your support of your actual team?

At least you have the decency to say that if your team played Le Arse, you would support Sliema - but do you not see how this causes a conflict?
As such, why don't you forget about Arsenal and stick with your real, proper team?

I'm not about to start comparing honours won again, we already did that with Arsenal and United clearly come out on top.
I think it would be disrespectful to Sliema to compare their success with United's.

As for where I'm originally from, not that you'll have any idea of where it is, but I'm from Didsbury, which is quite firmly part of Manchester thank you.
I don't live there any longer, I moved away when I was 23 for work.
But my family still do, and I visit them frequently.
They're all United fans, and have been for generations.
My Father and Grand-Father (RIP) were both at the '68 final in Wembley, and both watched the Busby Babes play week in, week out 12/13 years earlier.

My whole family have been United fans, and I fully expect future members to continue to be so.

By the way, there's an official help-line been set-up for distraught Arsenal and Chelsea fans this season:

0800 10 10 10

That's 0800 won nothing, won nothing, won nothing.

RyanRoon I told you that Sliema is my first love and Arsenal will never take Sliema's place in my heart.

So why do I support a team from London ?

Because in Malta football is not pro, therefore we follow English football, and therefore we have to support a team. It' a culture which has long been going on here, and if it's true you're coming in June, you'll know what I mean.

Because in Malta there are thousand of fans who follow Italy and when they win a game, there'll be a massive street party.

Cool! I'm really looking forward to my fortnight in your country next month, and now that I know this I'm looking forward to it even more!

We're staying in Valetta, my other half wants to see the Rennaisance centre etc, & we were also planning to go to St. Julians and St. Andrews, both of these are quite close to Sliema I believe? Gozo is the other place that we wanted to have a look at, maybe you can add some places of interest to the list?

Lighten up fella, it was a joke.

It's been doing the rounds for Chelsea fans since the CL win, you know when we did the double this season and won our 3rd European Cup/CL, and secured yet another back to back title in England? ok

3 years to 2007? Not sure I follow you there, the only year we didn't win anything was 2005.
That's one year, not 3 mate.

st.Julians is nieghbouring sliema. Beautiful seaside there, beleive me there's nowhere better for swimming than Sliema.

Gozo is simply fantastic. Beatiful countryside, beatiful sea, culture, simply excellent. I'm sure you'd love it, it's MUCH nicer tahn Malta.

In Gozo, you should visit Ramla l-Hamra, one of the best beaches in Europe.

Other places of interest, the south of Malta is very nice. Similar to Gozo. Anyway enjoy it. Hope the Italy fans don't disturb your sleep. laugh

League Cup mate. Not much, but something all the same.

Many thanks for the advice, will most certainly be checking out Gozo - the other half will like to hear about Ramla l-Hamra! Really should have a look at Sliema too then after your info, especially about the swimming!

Thanks for the congrats on the CL, did you enjoy the game?

Your welcome mate. By the way, if you want to hear the Italian street party, if Italy win a game that is, Sliema is the place to be. I don't think there'll be anything in VAlletta, it's actually quite a quiet city after 5 pm.

About the CL, beautiful game, SOS, Chelsea-Utd = game of 2 halves. Could have gone either way, and I'm steel feeling sorry for John Terry!!
