dude - I think you will find the argument is who is better - and irrespective of how many goals or trophies ronaldo wins, he is not a better player than Messi.

Goals do not define how good a player you are - they mean you are a goal scorer. Jermaine Defoe is a 20+ goal a season striker, does this make him better than Messi then ?

Understand football then come back and talk to me. Someone can have a great goal scoring record but not be a better player than another player who scores less. Anyone remember Prosinecki (Croatian ) ??? Wasn't prolific but could do things on the pitch that others could only dream of. Likewise Hagi from Romania, Stoichkov from Bulgaria and Okocha from Nigeria. These are all standout players that could do things others couldn't do.

Some might think "Okocha" ??? Well, watch footage of him when he was in France and for Nigeria in 1994 I think - the dude was amazing. Check out his greatest goals - these players are one offs, Messi is from this mould. Ronaldo although very good, is NOT in that bracket.

united-dreamer..

i'm not dismissing it but what did he score year b4 or year b4 that the prem is miles easier to score. why mention forlan/rossi what about henry who cant get his game or r v n who scored 30 plus every year in prem but cant in spain or torres who barely managed a dozen in la liga but surprise surprise cant stop scorin over here, owen another who cant stop scorin here but couldnt get a game in spain... the list is endless and only the most stupid footie fan would say its harder to score in prem!!!!!!!

the stats dont lie and 38 is very good but he is not the best player in the world because of 38 if thats your logic then adebayor is the second best in the world then!!!

take off your red glasses we heard it all before with olsen/beckham/giggs/keane
good yes the best NO!!

ask any neutral who is the best and you will get messi and he's 19!!!

ChelseatilIdie - superbly well put !!!!

Everybody knows that it is harder to score in Spain and Italy, where the build up is slower and more deliberate, the ball is not ping ponging up and down the pitch.

Thats why fans of the game and not just the English game would NEVER put Ronaldo in front of Messi. Messi will give you a goal of the season contender where Ronaldo would score some goals.

thank you hothead..

i'm not knocking ronaldo but manusa fans claiming he's best in the world after messi's performance over the both legs defies belief..

and his goals 2 of them on a par with the great maradona's are irrefutable proof of his brilliance and the guys 19!!!!

chelstilidie

What kinda messed up logic have you got going. How can you say Messi is the best in the world on the basis of two legs. If you were to base that kinda decision on two games, then you could claim anyone was the best player in the world. Any of you that claim that that the spanish league is better than the English are as stupid as you sound. In 2 years, spain have had 1 team in the SF of the Cl. in that same period England have had 6.

The thing that somes up the spanish game is how the top players all are linked with moves to England. I mean the likes of Eto'o Ronaldinho, Messi, Henry,

At Sevilla (supossedly the Liverpool of Spain) you have Dani Alves, Luis Fabiano and Kanoute always being linked with a move to the Prem. If Spain is so good why do all there players wanna go, and why do they constantly get outperformed in the CL.

Any way the game..... United got the goal we needed, and as with the first leg, completely won the tactical battle. Messi was the only threat so they could only pass to him. And that is why idiots like (chelstilidie) thought he was so amazing. Barcelona had one claer cut chance over 180 minutes of football compared to the numerous that we had.

Bring on Chelsea

Did you take into accout that he's 20 years old (or 21) but gain 23 million euros in 2007 to become the third in the list of football millionaries? I think that the one who get such a summ must play just better than the other...

You tell us that we complain about decisions on the pitch (proven complaints ... by TV)- yet when you had penalty incidents against you - which were clear as day - you complained like girls non stop, to the point where your captain wanted to fight people and kicked a steward, your other players cried 'racism' to defend them fighting after the match too.

Bunch of girls. This is the underlying reason why you are disliked, you are NOT honorable as a team.

Hypocrisy is the first word that springs to mind.
I'm not stupid enough to deny that United are guilty of complaining to refs, or that Ferguson doesn't try and shift the blame for a bad result away from the players (but that is publicly - you can be sure it is very different privately).

However - Arsenal are by far the most petulent side in the premiership (recently illustrated by the 4-0 defeat in the FA cup), and Wenger is at best on a par with anyone in the World when it comes to being a bad loser.

As for the Ronaldo v Messi thing - Messi is an exceptional player. He is as good as i've seen in terms of dribbling and close control, but Ronaldo is by far the more complete player at this stage. Yes Messi is younger and could well improve and surpass Ronaldo, but an awful lot of people in the know in the media (most of whom have played at the top level) seem to be in agreement that Ronaldo is currently the best player in the world based on performances this season/year.

Those same 'experts' also seem to share the same view that United do play fantastic football 95% of the time.

And for all you Arsenal fans - you must have short memories. Where was your 'Champagne Football' when Wenger sent out such a negative line up for the CL final in 2006 against.....Barcelona.
This was one of the few times when he actually realised that if they stuck to plan A Barca would tear them apart.

B e l l end, we were missing our first choice keeper for most of the match and were playing with ten men. We were also ahead for a large portion of the match.

You were - but the formation set out prior to that was not your usual one, and was on the negative side.

The same in the FA Cup final against United in 2005.

My point is that even Wenger concedes that at times you have to play the most effective way to win - you cannot win every game playing pretty passing football because top quality sides do not allow you to do it.
Barcelona are very good at nullifying this and play in such a way that when they get the ball, it is difficult to get it back - but, in the tie against Utd they did very little with the ball despite enjoying two thirds possession.

The Liverpool sides of the 70s and 80s were not always pretty to watch, but they knew how to win games. Not many Liverpool fans were complaining about that. They adopted a similar approach in Europe in 2005 in the k/o phase until they had to go for it in the final - yet United have to defend for the majority of a European tie and they're boring, negative, lucky, etc.

To be quite honest, i'll take a winning performance and a trophy first, champagne football is a bonus.
