lsabre (U1743466) posted May 1, 2008 Sorry guys (in particular Mike Siva), but I feel that provided he stays injury-free, Tyson Gay will be the Olympic Champion and the world record holder over both sprint distances by the end of the season...

sportylad29 (U11846222) posted May 3, 2008 As a Jamaican who loves track and field and knows a bit about what’s going on with the sport back home, I think the problem with Powell is the coach. Stephen Francis is an excellent coach, but he doesn’t seem to be a motivator, and no one under planet earth should dear to criticize ‘his majesty or his monarchy’. The biggest athletics meet is being held in Kingston today 03.05.08, and his athletes (Sherone Simpson, Foster-Hilton, Powell before the injury, etc) were all excluded by him his reason being they don’t get enough respect and favours from the Jamaica athletic federation. He further states that foreign athletes coming to the meet i.e. gay, clement, etc are treated better. A load of.... if u ask me!

Supersaiyanlevel4 (U11657449) posted May 4, 2008 Pressure is his kryptonite and the sooner he learns to block it out, the better. He needs to view Tyson Gay as just another athlete, as if he isn't a threat. I think with this kind of confidence he'll be able to produce his world record form and inevitably win gold.

afairplaya (U10803227) posted May 5, 2008 Sportylad; you are correct is your assessment of Powell. The sooner he replaces his coach the better for him and I am saying this as a Jamaican. I don't think that Powell is being done justice by his coach or management team. For Francis to actually say thaT Powell has no mental problems is absolutely bizarre if not hypocritical. Powell nearly dehydrated himself the way he was sweating at the starting blocks and I thought, naw, he's not ready for the ocassion. He was overwhelmed not by tyson gay but simply by the pressure of the ocassion and it will happen again if he makes it to the final in beijing. He cannot escape the competition from tyson gay as gay is simply a solid competitive athlete. His only saving grace this time is that if he does recover from his injuries in time for the Jamaica trials and the Olympics, he would be a bit fresher than most of his competitors who are already in full swing in their preparation. It worked for Ohourogue last year so may be te injury is a blessing in disguise. On the other hand, the pressure may slightly be off him as I expect few will expect him to win but if he does think about not holding a major title then he could falter under his own pressure. Good luck Powell, Jamaica will always support you.
