Mr. Capello - On an intense heated stage that produced the type of mayhem possible on a world platform and with the eyes of a nation as witness - you have found your 3 Lions Captain - He is wearing Chelsea Blue..

I don't think Gerrard is a good choice for Captain - not if we are going by Capello's criteria. He's looking for a good leader and role model on and off the field - I'm assuming he means particularly whilst wearing an England shirt. Gerrard is like Jekyll & Hyde playing for his club and country. A brilliant leader/passionate player for his club; basically shows up/goes through the motions for England. Gives inspirational, motivating interviews prior to a Liverpool game, but is a complete "negative nelly" in an England interview [i.e. right before the Croatian game he captained in JT's absence.] Furthermore, he failed to face the press after England lost the game. He left it to JT - who didn't play that night and of all people... BECKHAM to face the reporters questions!!! I don't think Gerrard wants the Captain's job to be honest...and it shows....Don't waste it on him. That's fair enough, you can't blame him for wanting to prioritize his club duties and being Captain for both is a huge responsibility. JT & Ferdinand are out and ROONEY... who said that?!! He's the only one who refuses to sing [mime] the National Anthem - you can't pick him! I think after the courage he demonstrated last week and for the positive attitude he always displays in an England shirt, it should be Frank Lampard....

FYI - the attributes Capello is looking for in the future England Captain, describe Beckham down to a tee. You never know what you've got till it's gone... He'll always be a tough act to follow...

The attributes Capello is looking for include exemplary behaviour on the pitch.

Beckham's behaviour on the pitch in recent years includes more yellow cards per game than any other player in La Liga plus four or five sendings off, including one for foul language in Spanish!

Coupled with his being the only player to be sent off as captain of England, the only player ever to be sent off twice for England, getting deliberately banned from playing for England...

Not what I would describe as exemplary behaviour.

I think to make things even worse than they are now, I would go for one of the goalkeepers. I don`t know which one though. Any comments ? Silly ones only please.

I don't think Terry is certain of his place in the team. His lack of pace requires England to play too deep and isolates the forwards. If we persist in playing Rooney up front on his own then we have few chances of relieving the pressure that playing so deep encourages. If Ledley King can get fit and stay out of the nightclubs long enough he is surely a better bet to play along side Ferdinand. And Mica Richards continuing emergence as a center half must mean Terry's opportunities could be limited in the future. The only two genuine candidates for the captaincy that are guaranteed their place are Gerrard and Ferdinand so surely one of those two must get the nod.

Personally I'd go for Gerrard as the Liverpool captaincy seems to lift him when the stakes are high so maybe he can inspire an ordinary England team in the same way he can, on occassion, inspire an ordinary Liverpool team.

Terry cannot be england captain, hes a born leader, but u see him at chelsea, he hounds the ref along with the other 10 chelsea players. He's unprofessional.

Gerrard for england is too quiet, he doesn't ever perform to the same standard, he's not got the same status for england as he does for liverpool, but i think if he was given the armband he would rise to the challenge.

Ferdinand, i think should be england captain, he's maturing at the right time, and like terry is also a natural leader. Ferdinand is more intimidating than Terry, and i think Ferdi gives off the 3 lions attitude, which Gerrard lacks.

Whispers of Rooney are ridiculous, he's too young, and when did he last perform for england, oh thats right euro 2004. The england formation should be changed to fit the way rooney plays, or play 442 without him and put in a striker who suits owen, the only striker we have that scores (funnily enough, whenever rooney doesnt play)

And Beckham, well he was always complacent with his place, apart from the recent brazil game where he had to prove himself, and the game after, but then same old story.

If Capello sticks with the tried and trusted he will opt for Gerrard.

One alternative, if he considers him to be a serious part of his plans, could be to opt for a new beginning and go for Barry.

Rio and Terry both have question marks, in Capello's terms, against their on and off field behaviour

Rio should be England captain. He has the passion, the football brain and is probably the best center back in the world. He has clearly grown in the United role and whilst he has done some stupid things in the past he should be allowed to see that as behind him now.
