Fed Cup Semis Commence Tomorrow

Fed Cup

2008 Fed Cup semifinals take place tomorrow both in Moscow and in Beijing.

Russia and USA will feature the first. The two-time defending champion, Russia, even without the worlds 3rd best player Sharapova, has to be the overwhelming favorite, with Kuznetsova, Chakvetadze for the singles, and Zvonareva and Vesnina for the doubles.

On the other hand, the severely under-strengthed Americans (without either Williams sisters), will be led by Vania King, Ahsha Rolle, and the first-ranked world class doubles player Liezel Huber who just got her US citizenship and will represent USA for the first time.

The second tie will be between two dark-horses: China reached the semis for the first time in its history, ousting the favorite France(3-2), and Spain upset the finalist of 2007 Italy.

China has to be the favorite playing home(Beijing)in the eve of the Beijing Olympics. Their stars are Li Na, Peng Shuai, and the two-time GS doubles champions Zi Yan and Jie Zheng.

Spain features a number of young and rather little-known players: Carla Suarez-Navarro, Nuria LLagatera Vives, Arantxa Parra-santonia and Maria-jose Martinez Sanchez.

Tomorrow(Saturday)s matches: Chakvetadze - King, Kuznetsova - Rolle, in Moscow.

Peng - Suarez-Navarro, Zheng - Vives, in Beijing

Reverse-singles and doubles (if necessary)on Sunday

My prediction: Russia - USA 4-1, China - Spain 3-2,

Your thoughts and predictions are welcome!

this is an article solely about tennis -- would appreciate if you could keep politics out of it. Thanks.

China should come out better than 3-2 after dismissing a much stronger French team than the unknown names the Spaniards are putting up.
Russia has a big advantage over the US no doubt.

I agree -- China also has a home-advantage.

I predicted it closer because it will be the first semis ever in the history of that country, and the enormous pressure to succeed at home might affect the psyche of the players in a negative way.

On the other hand, the young players from spain has nothing to lose, thus they can play freely.

But I believe that China will reach the first final in their history against Russia.

Russia - USA 2-0, Spain - China 2-0!!!

Russia is too strong for a severely understrengthed American team. They will win 4-1. giving the doubles to the Amis.

Chinas more experienced players choked badly under enormous expectation of the home crowd in the eve of their home Olympics. would be interesting to see if they could still come back and win the tie 3-2, as I predicted. But they now definitely have a very very tough road ahead.

"Nole, the best player of 2008, will continue his dominance of Federer -- I am sure that Nole is happier to play Federer than Naldandian.

Djokovic in two: 6-4, 6-2" [fantastic!!!bingting]

Glad too see that you found some consolation in Fed Cup Semis. Like you, I prefer Svetlána Aleksándrovna Kuznetsóva over Novak Đoković.

Well you've got the "two" for Spain right very quickly.

The Djokovic prediction has even less merit. He's a paper tiger, bing, a paper tiger.

To the surprise guests who usually have zero interests in womens tennis:

I also have zero interests discussing with individuals who possess zero knowledge in tennis, but never miss a chance to celebrate the injuries or the misfortunes of the opponents of their God -- last week it was Davydenko, and today, Djokovic.

But just one thing for you to think about:

Nadal retired in Cincinnati 07, against Monoco, feeling dizzy. Does that mean that Nadal is a paper tiger, or a player of lesser class that Monaco?

Think about it well, gentlemen!
