When Robson tamed Barca

European Football Manchester United
comment on the article

If Manchester United's previous meetings with Barcelona are anything to go by, their semi-final clash in this season's Champions League ought to be a classic.

The clubs met twice in the old European Cup-Winners' Cup and have twice found themselves in the same Champions League group.

Each tie proved to be memorable for different reasons but for pure drama the first, in March 1984, was arguably the best.

United had lost the first leg of their Cup-Winners' Cup quarter-final 2-0 at the Nou Camp through Graeme Hogg's own-goal and Juan Carlos Pérez Rojo's last-minute strike.

Ron Atkinson's side were given little chance of overturning that deficit against the Spanish giants, who were managed by World-Cup winning coach Cesar Luis Menotti and boasted a certain Diego Armando Maradona in their illustrious ranks.

But United had their own icon in Bryan Robson, who showed why he was known to Red Devils fans as 'Captain Marvel' with his display in the return at Old Trafford.

Robson got the fightback started with 22 minutes gone when he connected with a diving header from Ray Wilkins' corner and then, five minutes after the break, he sent the majority of the 58,350 crowd into raptures by slamming home from close-range after Javier Urruticoechea fumbled a Wilkins cross.

The tie was level on aggregate, but there was only going to be one winner. As United poured forward, Frank Stapleton latched on to a Norman Whiteside knockdown and lashed into the net from an acute angle.

BBC Sport has found out what happened to Arthur Albiston, Remi Moses, Jose Ramon Alexanco and the rest of the players who took part in that remarkable match 24 years ago - you can find out when the feature is published on Tuesday morning.

But what do you remember about the game, or United's other famous clashes with Barca down the years?

Yes, I certainly do remember being there that night...one of the biggest atmoshperes I have ever experienced at Old Trafford, since I started going in the mid 1970s...
I was stood in the United Road, which was famous for it's 'swaying' nights... absolutely amazing stuff.. going on the pitch after to carry off Robson was noe of my best ever OT memories!
In some ways almost more breathtaking than the night in Barcelona in 1999 when we won the treble - I was there too, right behind the goal when Ole popped out his leg for that one - magic!!! A lot of people around me didn't see that winner, as they were still celebrating the first from Sherringham... great nights, hopefully to be repeated over the next week and in the final...

COME ON YOU REDS !!!

I lived in Spain during the 1980's and remember seeing the match live on TVE1 (Spanish television). The most memorable comment from Big Ron after the match was that he was going home to "make a nice cuppa tea". The following day all the kids at school asked me "what did he say at the end of the match"? (the only bit that wasn't dubbed into Spanish as I guess they didn't drink much tea back then!!).
Go United!!! Chris Goman (not a Bar$a fan!!).

I was in the Stretford End (West Stand ?, give me a break) that night and we were in the ground an hour before kick-off and the whole place was rocking. What a game ! Robbo hardly gave Maradona a kick and Schuster played like a girl. My Mum recorded the game from the ITV highlights which had finished by the time we got back to Glossop. I must have watched that tape a thousand times before My Mum (the capitals are deliberate) taped over it with Corrie - "I thought as you'd watched it so many times....".
I've now bought a packaged tape of the game and Martin Tyler's "STAPLETON !" as Frank slams the ball into the net from Norman Whiteside's knock-down still brings me out in goosebumps. Does anyone remember a better game ? I don't. Andy from Houston, TX

Back in the days when Radio 2 only covered the seconf half of games like this. I remember John inverdale (i think) saying something like..."were at old trafford tonight where there's already been plenty of drama". I hated it when they did that. You had to listen to the radio highlights when all you want is the score. Luckily it was great news 2:2 at the time.

I was in the stretford end for this, age 16 I had come with a couple of mates from Alty GS - in the days when you could buy a ticket on the gate.

What a night - Robbo scored at the stretford end in the 1st half and then Gary Bailey waved his arms to get the noise going during the 2nd half.

I am surprised there were only 58k people there, it was the most incredible footy match I have ever been to.

Utd have to be confident about tonight, I hope Utd are agressive - 2-0 again would be nice!

I was only 15 at the time this game was played and, although being born in Warrington, was living down South. I'd been to the Bournemouth game earlier in the season and remember big Ron's post match comments. I have the highlights on DVD and still get goose bumps when Martin Tyler screams, "STAPLETON". Big Norman Whiteside was my absolute hero!!!

Yeah the Stretford end that night was packed at a time the when you could still stand on the terraces. I still have the programme in the house. When I got off the the 53 bus to Longsight I remember an old guy saying "what about that then kid".It must be up with my top 5 memories of the United nights.Maradonna never got a sniff. He played more like madonna!
Bryan Robson once again dug United out of a hole what a great player he was.

I certainly remember that night, as does my mum, as I returned home 1 Doctor Martin shoe less after it had been swallowed up by the Stretford End when Stapleton scored that third, glorious goal (we commuted from York back then so I had a bit of a hop back with my brother Steven). I remember being terrified beforehand thinking what Maradona might do to us, but Robbo was on another level that night, just like the crowd. Unforgettable.
