Ernie is too nice a guy, and without knowing it he is being intimidated by Tiger. He needs to be more serious about beating Tiger, and not be too friendly with him, especially on the course. He better start soon as age is creeping up on him.

I wonder what would have happened if Ernie had beaten Todd Hamilton in the Open play-off. I know he he hurt his knee but I reckon Ernie's problems are mental not technical. On that basis Butch is just being employed for "pep talk".

dear readingbean...quite the saechastic one arent we?
im sorry for picking a list of my 'best golfers from the last 20yrs'.
next time i will maybe make it the last 17yrs or 22 yrs ,whatever suits you really.
who says the list is purely based on majors won anyway!of course they are the most important factor when judging a golfers career.but not everthing.
for instance i believe greg norman to be a much greater golfer than the '2 majors bracket' he is in .could you honestly say that curtis strange or mark omeara are equall to the white shark!
truth is my list is very accurate because it is MY opinion.and for the money nick faldo is in the top 5 golfers of all time behind.
woods
nicklaus
watson
player
faldo
seve
els
norman
price
palmer

Are you limiting your 4 better than Faldo to the last 20 years?

What about Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson?

of course i am.
i have seen and know nothing of these older legends of the game.i am in no position to comment on how good or bad they where.i have been lucky enough to see the tail end of some of the greats careers..ala nicklaus, trevino, player however going any further back is pi**ing in the wind for me.even the great arnold palmer is very low on my list because of lack of tv coverage around of him in his pomp!
no disrespect just being honest!
p.s..tom finney, charlie tully and stanley mathews do not feature in my greatest footballers ever either ,but im sure they where great great players!!!

In golf, I think accomplishments tell one how great a golfer was/is. I am sure you do not need me to list the accomplishments on the 3 gentlemen that I mentioned, right?

Football is a team game and often, lesser players accomplish more by being on the right teams at the right times, e.g., Wes Brown at Man United.

I suppose Bradman Hobbs et al wouldnt make your top 10 cricketeers either.

As you say you're list. Im sure that anyone with a modicum of sense recognises making your list is about the same achievement as winning the monday medal at Old thorns.

Surely anyone who has won all four majors- Sarazon and Hogan must appear on the list and Hagen won 11 majors.

Norman was a bottler yes unlucky but also a bottler at the highest level.

Faldo was a great golfer but not even in the top 10.

Tell you what stick to commenting on a game invented in the last 20 years with lots of tv. Who's your top 10 strictly come dancing or dancing on ice candidates? The nation awaits your wisdom

dear mrbeancounter fom reading.
you are for sure at the top of my list of plonkers on this site.
as far as 'bradman hobbs 'is concerned im really could give a flying.
never heard of him and if hes a cricketer i never want to .stupid game played by dull people.
you can also spout major victorys from the early part of the last century untill the cows come home but really how hard where they to win.even the 'great' jack nicklaus once said it was so much harder to win mordern day majors because over 100 guys have the game to win as opposed to half a dozen in his day!
as far as nick faldo not being in the top10 golfers of all time .im sure even by your 'majors won in totall[all eras]'r calculations. faldo with six would not be far off.
actually any decent minded golf fan would tell you that faldo is easily in the top10 all time!
please stick to cricket history if this is the best you can do!

Top ten can be argued, top 5 I dont think so.

As a footnote, I have met NF and two of his wives numerous times at golf tournaments and on flights so I like the man.

I agree with Jonny. For reference Bradman and hobbs were two people. Don Bradman and Jack hobbs arguably two of the greatest sportsmen of all time- in Bradmans case the greatest.

Nick Faldo is by far the greatest golfer this island has produced and warrants a discussion of of being in the top ten. He wouldnt be in mine but then conformity might make the world a boring place.

In terms of being able to commentate on golf you might find the achievements Sam Snead Ben Hogan Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen enlightening. They were giants of the game

I concede it is impossible to compare across eras. Suffice to say I think there are sufficient gaps on Faldos CV to at best put him in the bottom opf the top 10 for me marginally outside it.

Ps els norman price and singh do not make the top 20 in anyones informed view
