Should golf be an Olympic sport?

comment on the article

Do you agree with PGA Tour chief Tim Finchem that golf should be included in the Olympics by 2016?

The sport has featured in the Games, albeit in Paris in 1900 and St Louis in 1904 - back then, the Games were so disorganised that the winning competitors did not even realise that they had been competing in the Olympics, but that is another story.

And if you think golf should be re-instated, do you side with Phil Mickelson, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els who say it should be an amateurs only tournament, or are you on Padraig Harrington's side, who would clear his schedule to play?

I'm all for it but I can't decide who should play.

What's your thoughts?

Ha ha yes, when I said amateurs I meant elite international caps that are Walker Cup level and are pros of the future - their handicaps are +3 and above!

As one of the biggest sports in the world, golf should definitely be in the Olympics. The only question is eligibility and format.

How about this: up to 3 Pro-Am teams per country, with the tournament played over 3/4 different courses. Field to be cut down to the top X number of teams for the final round. Think Dunhill Links Championship without the celebrities.

In a world 'possibly' but then again possibly not.
It's hard to imagine golf at an Olympic level, as there are so many sports which seem ideally suited and thus deserve our respect.
I'm not saying golf is in transition, but ideally the wisdom of changing a game which so many feel suited to most surfaces

I don't think that golf should be an olympic sport and agree with the comment that you would have the nearest pin medals etc. I think that Tim Fincham should concentrate more on a far more serious issue in my view - SPITTING. Rarely seen in Europe but the Americans seem to have no respect etc and blatantly spit on Tees which are surrounded by spectators, fairways, greens etc. What if they did go to olympics - all of the young children etc would see the likes of Woods spitting all over the place and think that's okay for him so it will be fine for me. They should introduce a penalty shot - fines are no good as they earn millions anyway. Same as not have to wear collared shirts - what is the world coming to. Football has tried to clean up it's act in terms of respect for referees because of protrayed image - why shouldn't golf follow suit? I won 6 golf balls for star letter in 2000 from Golf Weekly for my letter on this subject - they stated that management teams of Woods/Duval etc read the stats and it would be welcome - gone the wrong way I am afraid. I am sure this might invite some comments but, my view only.

Don't be ridiculous. You have to agree to random drug testing to compete at the Olympics.

No, please no. Golf is not an olympic sport and should not be. higher, faster, stronger. Doesnt represent any of these, is not therefore a worthy addition. Surfing will be in the olympics before golf ever will be, which it will not. You all mention these players. They are pretty much all from UK, Europe, and America. Not really representative of the sporting world is it?

Where are all the Bangladesh representatives? Ugandans? Ecuador? Cuba? You get my drift

I don't think any sport should be included in the Olympics, unless winning the title is the ultimate in the particular sport. Therefore golf should not be included. Nor should tennis, basketball etc

The big problem with having golf on the Olympic schedule is finding the right course or courses.

Unfortunately, Ireland which has some of the best courses in the world, will never host the Olympics.

Whereas China.....

I'm sure Mr Finchem will change his mind about olympic golf when somebody points out that the tournament will have to be held in the city hosting the olympics NOT the USA like the so called WORLD GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS
