Does Ferdinand need a new contract?

Premier League Manchester United
comment on the article

Rio Ferdinand's agent claims that the defender is close to signing a new contract worth a reported £130,000-a-week, despite having two years left on his current contract

The deal would keep Ferdinand at Old Trafford until the age of 34.

While Ferdinand has been in the kind of form that has seen him made England captain, and his partnership with Vidic at the heart of defence has been outstanding for much of the season, does he really need a new contract now? Or for so long?

one or two peole are critising my critisms. I guess they must just like football.

I may be the best in the world at what I do, mathematical research. Footballers are paid far more than me and others, just because society values them more.

Maybe those who critise me, should get a maths book and physics book,a and try learning something, rather than sucking up to footballers. Then they may change their minds.

This documentation has to do with the amount their respective club pays them annually.

But Beckham makes more money than all of them because of his modeling and other stuffs he does.

I take it professors list is just wages and not other earnings. Probably a fairly accurate list but what on earth is Darren Bent doing up there! 19th highest paid player in the world?Tottenham were well and truly done if that is true, but I can't believe he is on any more than berbatov or keane.

I was also under the impression that Ibrahimovic was one of the very highest paid players, and if he is worth over 100k a week, then there is no doubt Ferdinand is.

Wages are controlled by market forces and it would be impossible to regulate it on a global scale. I don't think FIFA have that power. Yes a cap on wages may bring back a more even playing field within national leagues, but if other countries don't follow suit the best players will gravitate towards the money. No one would want that, despite the lack of competition in english football, we all love having the very best players playing here.

Beckham's basic wage at the Galaxy is not that high. The huge numbers being banded about were because he now has control of is image rights etc, where as at Real the club take a cut.

That said, I can't believe Bent is being payed more than Totti! The guy IS Roma!

And dollar has hit the record bottom against euro too. That's must have caused a slight dent towards Beckham's pocket.

Footballers provide an entertainment service to, and thereby enhance the lives of, literally millions of people. They are one of a small number of key people generating multi millions in revenue for their employer.

Meanwhile, your mathematics research has essentially zero entertainment value. Probably only hundreds of people in the world can even understand it, let alone make use of it in any productive way. I'd be willing to bet it also has very little useful real world applicability, else you would be able to demand a much higher salary, or make a fortune in business.

By the way, the word is "criticise".

He'll stay anyway, Sir Alex doesn't need to splash the cash all at one time. He can sign a 2 year deal now, and will, unless an argument where we'll compensate by a small amount of money from a huge offer, stay by signing another one.
