Giles looking for instant success

County championship Warwickshire
comment on the article
Warwickshire

Warwickshire have undergone major upheaval in the wake of their double relegation with former England spinner Ashley Giles put in charge of them.

South African Monde Zondeki and Irish star Boyd Rankin will form a lively new-ball partnership for the Bears.

Experienced leg-spinner Ian Salisbury has also arrived and Ant Botha, who joined at the end of last season, provides another slow bowling option.

In a competitive second tier, the Bears appear to have enough to bounce back at the first attempt. What do you think?

Gilo is the man.. I can see this being a nice little sason for the bears.. Not much expected but i think they can prive a few people wrong.. Gilo will expect a lot so the players will need to step up to the plate.

Me thinks Giles will use the season to build Warwickshire back up to the legendary side it was once. However, it wont take 2 promotions to fix what the problem is.
The main problem is that the players decided to gove up halfway through the season and with the pathetic coaching staff last season stripping Maddy of the captaincy for no reason and not playing Bell (like in the FP Semi) it was a season to forget.
However Giles should use this season to build up players to their best potenial rather thern getting quick-fixes which will affect Warwickshire in the future such as 2 promotions.

This Warwickshire squad is full of mediocrity. It will be a season of little achievement in the 4 day and short games. The batting is inconsistant and the bowling is way short of the requirement. You have to bowl sides out in the Championship and contain in the shorter games.Warwickshire do not have the bowlers to do this.

As distant bear, last season was awful, our reasonable start papered over the cracks. Bowling is non-threatening, Boyd Rankin will hardly put fear into anyone. We need a Bond, a returning Proctor, or a wicket taking spinner. Batting can be fragile, with the old trade union saying of one out all out seeming to affect more than a little last year. We may have enough to get us out of division 2 but will the current bunch be good enough to get us to the top where we belong?

Looking forward to see how Rankin does under Donald.

We have only 4 front line batsmen who should be available all season: Westwood, Maddy, Trott and Troughton. Westwood seemed to have come of age last season. I hope he continues to progress. Maddy's average at Leicester (mostly div 2)was moderate. Trott and Troughton havn't looked special in recent seasons.
Mike Powell has been a 2nd 11 player for some time with a 1st class average of about 32. Of the regular quicks only Tahir seems to have an edge; we need him to stay clear of injury (but he is already injured!). Ash Giles has a big job to do. I wish him luck but I do not feel hopeful. The only bright sign is I'm often wrong!
