County preview 2008 - Somerset

Somerset
comment on the article

Fresh from a double promotion last year, Somerset will be raring to go in Division One of the Championship.

And with opening pair Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick now free of all their international commitments, they have a top order to be feared.

Old warhorse Andy Caddick is ready to lead the seam attack again, having had a back operation during the winter.

All-rounder Omari Banks is added to the squad, while South African paceman Alfonso Thomas is a Kolpak signing.

The mood in the camp is one of confidence. Can they bring a first ever Championship title to Taunton?

I think some of you people have failed to notice that last year we actually won a huge percentage of our home Championship games! Yes, early on in the season the hot weather made it look like Taunton was its usual flat self (despite all the money they spent...), but as the season wore on things changed markedly! I take your point that Caddick and Willoughby will not be around much longer, but whilst they are Somerset have one of the strongest and most consistent teams in the division!

I think our line-up will be:

TRESCOTHICK
EDWARDS
LANGER
HILDRETH
BLACKWELL
BANKS
KIESWETTER
TREGO
MUNDAY
CADDICK
WILLOUGHY

That is a good batting line-up and there are plenty of bowling options, a side more than capable of 400+ 1st Innings totals and 20+ wickets FC games!

slogalot, totally agree and I am looking forward to seeing Thomas this summer.

Someone in the office at Taunton is really switched on 'cause they keep signing these Kolpak players.

We could conceivably put out a team of 6 or 7 Internationals this summer and there hasn't been too many Somerset Squads that could have ever done that.

Last year everyone and their dog were slamming the bowlers this year the same even though the depth has improved. If the Taunton pitch is a pancake then why aren't the other teams coming and winning somerset seem to be able to get a result out of it. They have a squad able to get results home and away and International class players that do not get called away for large portions of the season. I called for two trophies last year (not quite happened) but will call for the same this year.

I repeat what i said a couple of days ago, most games last season finished inside four days not bad for a team that can`t bowl out the opposition twice.Hope the fish and chips are up to last seasons standard as well.looking forward to a great season

Just put my money where my mouth is and had a few quid on somerset at 10's. Come on you Zider boys, I think we'll have one of the most consistent line ups which has international class. This seems to be the key for success, getting international standard players playing week in week out. Somerset seem to have latched on to this and Tresco's official retirement from International cricket can only be good for us. We must have one of the best opening partnerships in International cricket, let alone county cricket.

I'm mystified as to why the Taunton wicket is described as a pancake. It's very Australian to me in that it has some bounce and pace. It rewards batsmen, it has something in it for the seamers and it will turn. Even I managed to get it to turn when I played there years ago!

Omari Banks is good cover for Ian Blackwell. Munday hopefully will get a good run in the side. The possible signing of Zander De Bruyn would be superb. Seeing the seam attack Sussex have out right now, Somerset's looks far better and their batting line-up is very exciting indeed. I really think they could challenge for the title. My tip is Durham though as their seam attack, especially on the Durham track, will take wickets consistently provided they stay fit.

If Somerset are any where near the top of the league it will be a miracle at least three sides Durham, Lancashire and Sussex are going to finish above Somerset as they have more all round quality than Somerset and unless Caddick gets lots of wickets and stays fit i think they will struggle as they do not have the strength in depth of other sides esp with Surrey strengthening, Hampshire with Bond and Tremlett, Yorkshire conceivably having Hoggard i will be surprised if somerset finish top half
